35 Winchester??
« on: June 12, 2012, 01:04:53 PM »
Any thoughts on a 357 rechamber to 35 WCF(405 necked down to 35 or 30-40 Krag necked up with a .10 short neck)? Big rimmed low pressure case....  I have no need for it but have just been wanting one and I have spare 357 barrels in Handi and Encore.   The 43rd edition of the Lyman Reloading Handbook shows the following data for jacketed bullets..

  • 47.0 grains of 4320 gives a 200 grain bullet a MV of 2225 fps, and 52.0 grains of the same powder gives a MV of 2475 fps.
  • 46.0 grains of IMR 4320 can drive a 220 grain bullet at a MV of 2150 fps, and 51.0 grains of 4320 can achieve a MV of 2395 fps.
  • 45.0 grains of IMR 4320 can achieve a MV of 2045 fps with a 250 grain bullet, and 50.0 grains of 4320 can drive 250 grain bullets to a MV of 2295 fps, 100 fps faster than the Winchester factory load

That sounds like a neat wildcat that basically duplicates the performance of the good old .35 Rem.  A few Handi folks have gone to the .356 Win.  More preformance, but you can load it down or to what ever level you wish, and you can buy factory brass.  Just being practical, but that's not why we enjoy wildcats, most do it just because they can and it's different.  So enjoy it if you choose to, or go with what ever round you like.  After all, you have those two barrels just sitting there begging to be different....     44 Man

[/size]If "need" was the criteria, we would have .243, 30-06, and .45-70, and maybe .223.  If you have the way to do it, go for it.

How about going to the .358 Winchester, would that work with the .357 barrel?  Or maybe have a .308 barrel bored out and rechambered to .358?

I like the road less traveled and the nostalgic old rounds like the 35 Winchester.  I am not a big fan of the 1895 lever action that it was originally chambered in.   358 Win and 356 are both great performers as well as the 35 Rem in the Handi.  The low pressure rimmed cartridges seem to be best performers(least amount of trouble, best accuracy with least tinkering) in the handi, such as the 45-70, 30-30, 22 hornet.  I think the 9.3x74r would also be great in a handi.

The 35 Winchester has been mentioned before. It's a good candidate for the handi action. It's about the 35Rems equip with lighter bullets but comes into its own with heavier bullets that can make use of its larger case capacity.
As you can see by the quoted ballistics it's larger case and lower pressure crest a velocity curve that fairly flat. This is because of the larger case and the lower pressure sits operating at. Higher pressure calibers with less case cap really slow down when the "heavy for caliber" bullets are fired. They are best served with light to mid range bullets.

The down side is brass is hard to find. 401 brass is easily made into 35 cases but it's costly. Other cases can also be used but require foarming. In the end ballistics that are not allot better than a 35 Rem and less than a 35 Whelen are the result. But with these two off the shelf ammo can be used and factory chambered barrels are/where avalible.

35wcf, is a great round I had a Browning 1895 converted to it and use both 30-40 and 405 brass to form it, have read where 303 britt can be used also, loaded to run just a little faster than the old 35 Remington, its a sure deer killer

Hornady 405 Win brass is usually readily available although a bit spendy, Midsouth even has some primed nickel available for about half what the yellow sells for, although I dunno how well it would neck down.

Bertram in Oz makes 35 Win brass with correct headstamp. But it looks like they may be using a Gold-Brass alloy :o   $53.80/20.....

I think the 9.3x74r would also be great in a handi.

I have 30 pieces of new 9.3x74R brass and I like to stare at them and dream. 8)

There's always the rebore option, Jess with do it for $225 shipped if he has the reamer, $285 if he has to rent it, my 20" 243 Superlight will be going to him shortly for conversion to 9.3x62 which is comparable to the 35 Whelen AI in case capacity.  ;)
