I've not shot a lot of standard 30-30 loads, but if'n I was lookin for a new powder to try, it would be Hodgdon Leverevolution, excellent velocity at low pressures, the start data show velocities at or above the other powder max loads, yet the pressure is a lot lower, what more could a fella ask for.  ;) There are several members here that give it very high praise and I've seen the same on other forums.

LEVERevolution®

Hodgdon® Powder Company and Hornady® Manufacturing have teamed together to answer the frequently asked reloading question; "Can I buy the powder used in Hornady LEVERevolution factory ammunition?" Yes, this is the same spherical propellant used in Hornady's innovative and award winning high performance factory ammunition. This fabulous propellant meters flawlessly and makes lever action cartridges like the 30-30 Winchester yield velocities in excess of 100 fps over any published handloads, with even greater gains over factory ammunition. Other cartridges include the 35 Remington, 308 Marlin Express, 338 Marlin Express and the 25-35 Winchester. The list of cartridges and bullets is limited with this highly specialized powder, but where it works, it really works.

The LVR looks very interesting. I assume it would work just as well in the 30-30AI. No 125 grain bullet data though, it starts at 150 grain.  :-\ I'll have to check my Hornady book tonight.

I'm waiting to hear back from Hodgdon on a query about @ 10 grs Trail Boss behind that Hornady 86 gr .308 short jacket RN. I will advise here when they respond.

Doc,

Standard loads with jacketed I like Ramshot TAC.  For really slow loads with cast boolits either Unique or 700X.  THis is in a 94, don't have a Handi 30-30.

Little more than a taste of IMR 4759-SR with a 110 gr cast for rainbow round with a 22 pop.
A pound of that will last longer than a bottle of Jabanero pepper sauce.

Lots of good powders for the 30/30 it's easy and compliant.

In mine the only powder I use is WW748. Gives me top vel accuracy and prefomance.

At that rate I couldn't afford IMR 4759SR as I go through a couple of bottles of Habanaro sauce every month! :o

Dave- and Gendoc- Hornady tech told me LVR is to slow for any bullets under 150 grain which is why you done see any data for it probobly. I can tell you though that the published on the container load with there 160 grain bullet is very accurate out of my handy. I am going to try some 150 hor sp with it soon.h4895 has performed great with 125 grain bullets so I havent tried others . I have rel7 and h4198 just havent found the need to try them but was using them in 7.62x39 so i would think they would perform ok with light bullets in 30-30.

H-335 for jacketed bullets ranging from 110 grains to 170 grains.  IMR-4198 works well too but only tested on 150 grain jacketed bullets.

In my Handi, a max charge of W748 from most manuals is most accurate.

I've used a ton of 748 and 3031 plus a few others in the last 30 years.  Since trying Hodgon's LVR, unless I run out and can't find more in an emergency, I doubt I'll use anything else.  36 grains with a 150 Nosler Ballistic Tip is getting me a chrono'd 2300 and from what I've seen, I honestly believe I could get 2500 before showing pressure signs.   I could see about tweaking mine for accuracy as its only grouping a bit under two inches but since I'm deer hunting at 200 yards max. I really don't see the need for any better.

86 gr semi-jacketed .30 Mauser (Hornady)
WLRP
11 gr Trail Boss

For the benefit of those who may not know, the formula for reduced pressure loads using Trail Boss from the Hodgdon website is here:
http://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/Trail%20Boss%20Reduced%20Loads%20R&P.pdf

This will be for varmints and plinking. I would call it a 50 yard round.

Update on that .30 Mauser/TB load for 30-30.

Based on the advice from Hodgdon on Trail Boss, "max is full case without compression", 11.5 gr Trail Boss is about right, not touching the bullet but close. The problem I have had is that the seater plug on the Lee die is for a longer ogival bullet and so it digs into the soft lead of the round nose short jacket and either "holds" onto it, tearing up the lead or cants the bullet on seating, deforming the case mouth and ruining the brass. The price you pay for cheap Lee RGB dies. But, I called them to see if they had optional seater plugs that might work and, for $8, they will make me one custom for that bullet. So, we shall see.

It's a sort of funny looking load with that little round ball bullet on top of the bottleneck case. Very retro looking.

What I do for measuring Trailboss is lay the bullet next to the case. Mark a line where the base of the bullet would be when its seated. Cut the case off at that length and solder a handle to it.
I know I could use my lee dippers, but this way you only have to look at the case to see what its for .

So I got my new seater from Lee but haven't been able to try it yet. I did shoot the small batch that I made up of 30-30 w/11.5gr TB and the 86gr short jacket bullet today. What a little honey! If you have recoil sensitive kids or ladies, this load is a marshmallow. Feels like a stiff 22LR. I was zeroed at 100 yards with 30(ish) gr of Varget the Hornady 160 gr FTX. The TB/30 Mauser load wasn't very accurate at 100 yards but the hold was generally about 2" above zero and groups were about 3" - 4". I almost wondered if the bullet was going to make the target at that range, so I was pleasantly surprised. I will mix up a new batch and check accuracy at 50 yards.
