Updated yesterday at 8:34 PM        LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - - An Indiana student was stuck in Mexico for nearly six weeks and she was in danger of missing her graduation.

 Elizabeth Olivas arrived at Indianapolis International Airport early Friday morning with friends and family patiently waiting her arrival.

The 18 year-old had to travel to Mexico to meet a requirement to obtain a permanent visa or green card within six months of her 18 birthday to remain in the United States, even though she has been living in Indiana since the age of four. Her lawyer said she missed that deadline by one day because of a leap year miscalculation.

"I was like, nuh-uh! Oh my gosh, thank you.  I was just astonished and it felt really good.  I just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. But, I had to continue to wait, but it was worth it because in the end, I'm good and I can continue to pursue my dreams." Said Elizabeth Olivas.

Immigration officials wouldn't let her return to the United States at first, however after six weeks Olivas' visa was approved.

Olivias is the salutatorian for her senior class and made it back just in time for her graduation Saturday.

Illegal means illegal. Grades have nothing to do with it. If I get caught driving without a licence should I be set free because I am a good driver?
 
If her parents would have gotten their Scheiss straight 14 years ago perhaps she wouldnt have had this recent trouble.

Yes she was a criminal, she was living here illegally and she knew it. She is not an American either, she's a Mexican. She is a legal immigrant now, for which I am glad......and I hope she is eternally grateful!

American?? NOPE, just a prime example of the criminals here who laugh at our laws and disrespect us by totally ignoring our laws and think they got it coming. She should have to wait just like the ones who come here legally, obey our laws and adopt our customs. No sympathy from me. She's known for 14 years what  she was and done nothing til she got caught. AMERICAN?? Not even close, just another criminal invader. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Uh, she's not 14...although she once was. And at 14 I understood the difference between legal and illegal.......and right and wrong. At any point in her life she could have turned in her parents, who were really the ones responsible for her situation. You can make all the excuses for her you want too...but they are just excuses for not doing the right thing.

When I was 13 I turned in a foster family for abuse. They got off lightly, but they were never allowed to have foster kids again. It was the right thing to do!

What kind of kid turns in their parents for trying to give them a better life? ???
 
I'm thankful I live in a different community. My daughter graduated high school yesterday and the most impressive thing was the cheers, banners and balloon launches from the Hispanic community when one their kids names were called. I don't care if their parents are legal or not, I've seen the sacrifices they've made for their kids. At the local scholarship awards several weeks there were scholarships specifically for immigrant kids. We're sending the son of one of the hardest working guys I know to MIT. His goal is to get a PhD in physics. While there are exceptions, overall these kids are a great thing for my country!

Cuts, do I understand your position to be, that you think a fourteen year-old should have turned in her parent to the INS for being in the country illegally?

In a word.....YES!!!!!!!! Otherwise she's not someone this country needs anyway. I knew better when I was 13, and I wasn't even an honor student!
