Data Request
« on: May 27, 2012, 08:07:12 AM »
Does anyone have loading data for the 308 Win using a 140 gr GCFN bullet?
I would like to get about 2000 fps.
None of my books show loads for that weight.

I have Unique,Trail Boss,Blue Dot, 2400, SR 4759.

4198 as my fastest IMR powder.

Your IMR SR4759 is faster than the 4198 but around 22gr to 24gr of 4759 should get you there.

When someone says the fastest powder they usually mean burn rate, it must have been a trick question lol.

Thanks guys,
Twas'nt meant to be a trick question. I did write the velocity I wanted and of course the burn rate was for the only IMR powder on the list.

Muznut see PM I sent. :)

being a long time lover of cast boolits one of the most commen mistakes i see being made is getting stuck on velocity .
start low  and work up , let the rifle show you what it wants to shoot .

what are you going to be happier with  boolits @ 1700-1800 fps that shoot 1 moa   or boolits that shoot  3 moa at 2000fps

start low and work up , while chances are very good you will find aceptable acuracy  at the speeds you want .
you might find   a load that shoots better  be it a bit slower or faster then you want

George...
The velocity and the size of the meplat makes a hardcast bullet a killer or crippler. When you have something as small as a 30 cal cast bullet you need a certain amount of velocity to make it work as a hunting bullet for big game. 100 ft/sec one way  or or the other may not make a difference. In the case of that 30 cal round I don't want to go below 1800 ft/sec

Thanks for the pm BBF but as stated my new bottle of SR4759 says IMR in front of the SR4759 and the data I gave you put you where you need to be. ;)
