Niospan was given to me for a while.  My Cardiologist advised me to take it along with a small yogurt.  When I had the yogert no hot flashes, without the yogurt I was out sitting on the porch in my shorts at 30 below.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I had never heard of red yeast rice so I went to WebMD and they seem to confirm the effects of RYR on cholesterol production. They also mention that the FDA has prohibited the sale of RYR with its active ingredients. The FDA feels RYR is an untested and unapproved drug.  ??

In general, the medical profession position is that homeopathic treatment of any condition is quackery. The relationship of big pharma and medical education is total.

The facts remain that medicine [FDA approved] does work. Snake oil salesman persist [carnivora !].  I wish our health care professionals could focus on what we need on an individual basis in any form that is beneficial.  We pay the bill in any case.

Gee, didn't ya know? There's no money in cures. The money is in drugs that either get you hooked or your told you have to take for long periods of time.

I believe you can go thru US medical schools without taking one nutrition course, nor having one as a pre-requisite.  However, you will take plenty or pharmaceutical science courses. That's the way they like it, but why outlaw home homoepathic, and nutritional remedies out right..?.. ;) ;)

I couldn't agree with you more ! Ok if you don't want the loadup on drugs, but why must the govt 'outlaw' certain homeopathic practices ?  If govt is truly concerned, they could issue warnings..but to outlaw some natural foods etc, leaves a sour taste..

Had a bad-news doc visit about two months ago; very high cholestorol/liver funkiness. He said it's mostly genetic, but my consumption of rice, bbq & ice cream has to stop, sort of.

Put me on Crestor, but... that stuff is too expensive, at nearly 200 bucks a month. So, today, follow-up visit... numbers better, but hard to tell since I ran out of Crestor... doc wrote me script for Prevastatin. Cost is about five bucks a month, with some minor drawbacks... we'll see how this works. And I'll work on the diet more.

I've not had any discernable side effects from Crestor; hope there are none from the  Prevastatin.

Just watch it close..check the side efects and ascertain that you're not exhibiting any of them.
Some folks can take statins with impunity, perhaps you're one of them.
I went many months on lipitor..i was laying the muscle/joint soreness to over-exercise, strain, age etc..not connecting it with the Lipitor until one day I could hardly move.
Your bod might tolerate it OK..but just watch the stuff..I'd rather nobody go through what I did, trying to control cholestrol..

Make sure your doc is also looking  at your liver function enzymes as well!     You may not feel anything and your cholesterol can get lower but your liver could suffer.

Remember doctors pratice medicine , people react different to drugs and treatment . The paitent must decide if either is helping or not .And decide if they should continue use or not.

I had the same problems with leg cramps and joint pain.  To keep colestrol down, I take two garlic tablets (jell type) a day with a morning and evening meal.  Garlic helps lower colestrol by about 20%.  I eat red meat, but pork runs my bp up sometimes.  So it is mostly chicken, fish, venison.  I do love bacon though.  Doctor told me if I loose 40 lbs, can probably get off all my meds, even type II diabetic meds.  Hard row to hoe though.  lost about 10 so far in about 5 months.  Just have to eat less and exercise more.

My wife just switched back to cholestipol, it worked good before her heart dr changed it. He's a fine surgeon but a poor pill pusher, he changed both her BP and chol meds and after problems we had to switch back. If I hadn't just gotten a 6 mo supply of the simvistatin I'd ask the dr for something else. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

Up date.  Thigh is still hurting.  Muscle that cramped is bruised.  Entire thigh is swollen, and turning blue, and painful.  Went to see a doctor this morning.  He drew blood and are running a bunch of test.  Gave me some Vicadin, and another pill that should stop the swelling.  It's been six days and it is still painful to move my leg or to walk.  Doctor is stumped, they never saw cramped muscles bruise up like this one has.

Wants to see me back in two days, or if it gets worse.

Like I said...after deregulation and marginalizing government who is watching these people.?  This is just a part of a bigger picture. Really, US HC is becoming more and more like vetenarian or 'stockyard' medicine...as some critics describe it. (not just me!)

My first incident was with Lipitor.  I ran on that daily for several months..my joints getting more and more sore, my muscles aching.  I blamed it on arthritis, age ..probably everything but the meds.  Then one day while travelling, i found I could hardly get in and out of my car.  My veteran's PA caught it, since I had an appointment with her shortly after arriving home.  Blood tests showed it was doing damage to my muscles, so I quit the lipitor and soon started feeling better.
A few months later my primary care (civilian) doc suggested I "just try" some Crestor..only 1 or 2 pills per week, which dropped my cholestrol levels dramatically.  Then, one morning I woke up with a "blown up" right knee...about twice it's size..and excruciating pain, I could only walk with a cane or crutch.  I dumped the Crestor right there and then !
It was a long, painful trail back ! I could hardly touch the accelerator pedal in my car.. had to run on cruise control..allowing my knee to rest.
Best way I can deascribe the pain the first couple days, it w2as just terrible pain with burning sensations.  I once had a piece of wood driven into my hand while working pipeline(1958)..doc didn't see it until it was well infected.  Novacaine didn't do a thing..just bite a towel and let the doc cut, on the fleshy part of my palm ..near the base of the thumb.
That surgery and my blowed up knee were about on par for the worst I've experienced.
Only difference being..when doc quit cutting, most of the pain stopped, not so with the knee.

That's why for me...I don't even want to hear the word "statin"..

Prevention is sometimes the better cure.  Staying away from processed food, food with a lot of sugar, eating green veggies, eating fruits instead of candy, keeping the weight down, exercise.  This stuff can go a long way to keeping one healthy.  However, genetics also play a big role.  When they first discovered colestrol, in 1970 the average American had a count of about 300.  The studies found out that those below 200 had far fewer heart attacks and strokes.  Non-smokers had far less cancer, heart attacks, and strokes.

Most health supplements were standardised in Germany, China, or Japan.  They do work.  Gensing, green tea, garlic, saw pelmetto, cinimon, are among things that work in certain areas.  Garlic lowered my colestrol.  Saw pelmetto helps my prostrate better than Avodart with no side effects.  Gensing helps give a little more energy along with a lot of B vitamins.  Eating wild meat is better than domesticated.  Growing your own veggies is better than store bought.  Lots of things are better and healthier.

Sourdough, have you quit taking the colestrol medicine?  Sometimes it takes a while to get out of your system.

That's all been checked out.. and of course, the condition has not returned since leaving the statins behind.
