Iron Sights
« on: May 11, 2012, 12:47:20 AM »
I've always shot my revolvers with iron sight.  Anyone shoot the Contender pistol in pistol calibers with iron sights?  Are you comfortable with iron sights at 50 yards?  Thanks,  Dennis

I used to be when these old eyes were a lot younger. I still shoot my iron sighted pistols at 50 or more yards but only at targets. I'm not confident enough at longer ranges to hunt with them any more without optics.

Yep, on my 10" 357 I put a homemade red fiber optic front and a Williams peep rear with two green fiber optic dots.  Works fine with my 69 6/12 year old eyes.

I replaced the factory iron with the williams guide sight. That peep helps alot.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

The only two pistol barrels I currently have with irons for the contender are a .22 and a .357, and both are plenty accurate at 50+yds.  They dont do too bad at 100yds either, but I think they'd do better out there if it wasn't for the loose nut holding the gun.

I will go through a lot of ammo in a few weeks at the IHMSA West Coast Championships.  .22LR to 100 yards and 22 Hornet to 100 yards both TCs with open sights.  Will also shoot 300 whisper barrel to 200 yards with open sights.  I have shot 44s, 357s, 45 LC, etc to 200.  Accurate if you have patience to follow-thru (wait wait wait, bullet exits barrel  ::) ).  I have upgraded a lot of my handguns to faster "rifle" rounds so I spend more time on sighting and assuring trigger squeeze rather than on follow-thru waiting for bullet to exit.  Were only talking portions of seconds here, but when the clock is running, it can feel like an eternity.  FA 41 mag, BF 7US, and a couple of XP-100s will be shot out to 200 yards with open sights. (Not TC sights tho....).  A good open sight, in many instances, is better, and more accurate, than a rifle scope.

Absolutely. I shoot peep sights better than the factory irons but I feel comfortable with either at 50 yards with a 10" 45 Colt or 10" .357 Magnum.

Just for entertainment do a You Tube search on IHMSA Silhouette.  There are several.  You'll see a few t/c's being shot using iron sights. Richard

I have an aperture that attaches to my eye glasses and it works wonders. It seems to force the eye muscles to work harder to focus. Not too sure if this is the real reason it works but the fact is, it does work. A small hole cut in black electrical tape works just as well on eye glasses.. I use optics for  100 yards and beyond but open sights for everything else when handgun hunting.
