6.5 Bower load info
« on: January 18, 2009, 06:29:52 AM »
Does anybody shoot or have load data for a 6.5 Bower?
There are several wildacts that are similar so it may go by a different name.  It is a 307 case necked down and slightly improved.
Looking for 120 and 140gr data.

Correct name is 6.5 Super Bower... made from 307 Win, 356 Win or 444 Marlin cases.   Have Don's Bullberry barrel and all the data, but with limited mobility don't have any way to easily get it copied or scanned, and it's too much to retype.   Are you looking for a load for a specific powder in those two bullet weights?

One of the most common LR precision loads for this cartridge out of pistol length barrels is a 140 grain Sierra HPBTM pushed by IMR4350.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Yes, that is the diection I want to head.
I have a good supply of 139 and 140gr bullets as well as an adequate supply of 120gr bullets.
I didn't know what powders to start with.  I have some 4350, BL-C(2), H-335 and IMR 4831.  I have smaller quantities of H-380 and IMR 4064.
Any load info will be appriciated.
My barrel is 16.5"
Let me know if they are MAX laoads or starting loads.

Standard disclaimer - I take no responsibility for these loads in your firearm.

From the powders you already have...
These are in my data for the 6.5SB I got from Don Bower.    These are max loads in a 14" barrel at 5,280' elevation, so Don suggests backing off 3 grains and working up.   Gain/loss is about 35FPS per inch on longer/shorter barrels.

100 grain bullets 37.8 gr IMR4064 @ 2755 MV & 1433 ME.
120 grain bullets 38.5 gr H4350 @ 2460 MV & 1613 ME.
140 grain bullets 36.0 gr IMR4350 @ 2290 MV & 1631 ME.

Optimum powder for long range precision with 100's is H450, with 120's is H414 and for the 140's IMR4350 as already mentioned.

Years ago I checked into Bower's cartridges and frankly they scared the hell out of me.  That looks like very hot loading.  People shooting them are still around I guess.  What is it that keeps them from destroying a Contender?

Don't know why they scared you.  Don had a self impossed maximum pressure limit of 44,500 PSI for his 307 Win, 356 Win and 444 Marlin based wildcats, leaving a safe margin to the generally accepted 45,000 PSi that is presumed safe for that case head size in a Contender.   Add the reduction of back thrust (and thus pressure) due to the 40 degree shoulder of the Super Bowers, the fact that many of his best loads are 3-4,000 PSI below his imposed maximum and all of these wildcats are safe in the Contender.
