Looking for old cannon model
« on: May 06, 2012, 07:38:21 PM »
In 1852 William Beschke wrote a long memorial to Congress about his inventions including a "breech loading steady ship's gun."  The only real physical description of it I could find in his diatribe was on page 56:  "My model-gun with its movable breech, &c., weighs fifty-three pounds, and-its carriage thirty pounds; the length of the gun and breech is fifteen inches."

Does anyone know if this cannon model is sitting in a museum or private collection somewhere?

If you want to read his tome, it is here.  If you have insomnia, reading this should work a lot better than counting sheep.

Blue, thanks.  Glad you found that.  It sounded familiar so I checked my Archives photos files and found that I had gone thru that entry in 2009 and taken a lot of photos.  Of course then I didn't know about Beschke, so I pulled up this photo of the B page from the index, but unfortunately no Beschke listed.  This photo is before I learned that you should turn off the small desk lamp when photographing things there, since all it does is make the lighting uneven from top to bottom of the page.  They don't allow use of flash.
