I got my first Handi
« on: May 05, 2012, 06:40:08 AM »
I just got my first Handi, a 223, 22" barrel, scope, no iron sights. Pete and I went to the range and we shot off 5 boxes of ammo, just 2 through the Handi and 3 through his AR15. We had a ball. It was the second time I had been shooting in 30 years or so (first time was a few days earlier with just Pete's AR15). The Handi was well behaved, though my shooting needs some improvement. I guess that'll come with practice and lessons from Pete. He's in the Army and shooting is his business.

On the Handi, the only thing I need to take care of is the trigger, I need it lighter and smoother. I need to be able to squeeze a round out of the barrel rather than having to yank it out. I saw a trigger faq here somewhere, I'll have to try and find it again.

Now if I can just find a CR-3855...

Welcome to GBO! The 223's are generally good shooters. The faq and help sticky has just about everything you wanna know about a handi. There are a couple different trigger improvement threads in there.

g00dtime - Why don't you just shoot the rifle for a while, before you decide to do trigger work.  New rifles smooth out over time.  My first rifle a Marlin 336C in 30-30 has an action like glass, that's what 41 years of constantly using the rifle will do for you.

If after shooting the Handi for a while, and the trigger is still too stiff, the instructions for a trigger job, are in the FAQ's.  Just be careful, Handis seem to multiply like rabbits.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Welcome, but be really careful lightening that trigger.  My buddy's a gunsmith and he went a bit too far on the one he tried.  He was shooting for around 4 lbs and ended up with less than 2 lb break.  He's just buying a new trigger and starting again now.  hehe

A CR 3855?; I interpret that as a desire for the 38-55 Target Model, now discontinued. The last year of production seems to have the previous tight chamber throat issue resolved, but the few thou. needed to be removed is easily done by hand with one of 4D's reamers. There are some tricks short of that, too.
Unfortunately those who have them dont seem to be eager to let loose (me bad, guilty as charged), so IF you ever find one you better not linger.

Welcome to GBO, the H&R authority!

Sounds like you have a pretty good shooting buddy! Those Army guys sure do know their way around ARs and most can shoot pretty well too. ;) Take advantage of every opportunity you have to shoot with him; someday he may get a 9 monther and have to leave you to shoot by yourself. :-\

Thanks, Dinny at KAF

You may want to stay away from the 5mm ammo the ARs like.  It's higher pressure and harder primers.  Sometimes causes problems in the Handi.  Factory .223 or handloads are better.

You'll like the .38-55 if you get one.  They're a lot of fun.  Mine shoots very well either loaded up or down.

It's nice to hear the word "first".  I see more in your future.  Good luck,

Pete
