palletwood laminate?
« on: May 02, 2012, 04:07:03 PM »
Anyone else have one? My brother told me his one handi was a laminate in straight walnut color and I didn't believe him. He brought the stock to show me and sure enough thats what it is. No checkering or anything just a regular monte-carlo in the PW color. I've never seen another one.

They used them for a very short time. Pretty good stocks actually, not as prone to warping or twisting as regular pallet wood stocks and not as heavy as the regular laminated stocks sets we usually see. I had one set and just recently traded it to a member who was looking for just that, a Palletwood laminated set. I traded it for a couple of Survivor sets that I had more use for so I think we both were satisfied....<><.... :)

Makes me wonder if a palletwood laminate could be turned into a blonde laminate by taking away the stain and finishing with a clear coat?  ??? If so, that would alleviate the problem a few of us have finding blonde forends and stocks to match the pieces we already have.

The PW lam set does not seem as well made as the other lams we have... when out in the rain you do feel the laminations after a little while, our other laminates seem to have better glue or something... not complaining just saying there seem to be differences.

If they absorb rain then they oughta absorb dye. ;)

The difference in the palletwood and Ultra lams is the palletwoods aren't resin laminated which are impregnated with a 2-part epoxy under pressure, palletwood are just wood sheets glued together with no prior treatment, they'd cost most to mfr if they were resin treated first. My 2004 204 Ruger Handi came with a palletwood lam stock set.

I thought it was the cost of lumber.  Making plywood seems to be a reasonable option when facing finding pieces of decent (??) wood for stocks.  Haven't tried the rain thing yet.

I've got a HB223 that I bought a number of years ago that came with a laminated stock that was only clearcoated, the wood was almost white.  Started not to buy it, but brought it home, stripped it, applied a walnut stain, then Tru-Oiled it.  Turned into a right good looking piece of wood, the stain really brought out the grain.  Goat

That's probably what we call a blonde laminate.

If you had to use paint stripper on one would the stripper release the glue?

Dave here are the two i have one of which i got from you. I refinished both
Yukon I put one coat of spray stripper on mine and it removes a good bit but not all the old finish. make sure to srub it after I use dawn dish soap and it has worked fine.
