handi 30-30 and 150 grain bullets
« on: May 06, 2012, 03:31:37 PM »
Well while sitting here watching my home town flyers get it handed to them I began to think about more pleasant things. The 125 grain bullets fly great in it but if i want to try the 150 what bullets have shot well for you guys? has h4895 been any good as that is what I am using for the 125 and would be great if the 150 performed well with it also. I was thinking of trying the hornady 150 as I have a free pack owed to me by hornady.

Deerhunter, you have one of the best shooting Handi's made.  And allowing for some individual preferences, the 30-30's seem to shoot well with most bullets they are fed.  My old Topper is my favorite Handy and likes the Sierria 125 Pro Hunters over H4895 but it also performes well with Rem and Winchester 150 factory loads.  I have also used bulk pointed Rem core lock 150's and the Speer 150 flat nose, also over H4895.  While I have not fired those bullets for group, they seem to shoot as well as the 125's do.  Me?  I'm loading up all the brass I have with the Sierria 125's and never looking back.  I like to find a good working load for a gun and only use that load so I always know where it will shoot when I pick it up.  If I want to shoot something else, I use another gun.  44 Man

44 man you are rite the 125 sierra behind 34.5 grains h4895 is a dime size shooter in my gun. Just figured I might try a 150. after thinking about it though they probobly wouldnt perform well at the lower speeds unless i truly went with a 30-30 bullet which defeats the purpose of a high bc 308 bullet. I do wonder how the 140 hornady ftx would work. I know the 160 factory stuff shoots great. But those are much more expensive.

Try the Sierra 150 SP flat bases.  They are a bit fragile for faster calibers, but work great in a 30-30 Handi.  I dumped 2 deer out of a group of 7 that came through, at ranges of 147 and 160 yds.  So much for that brush gun short range theory.

I'm running Nosler Ballistic Tips with LVR powder chrono'd at 2300 with decent results.  Seated .010 off the lands, I can shoot anywhere from three or four shots up to numbers in the high teens and keep 'em all under two inches at 100.  For deer I should be good to at least 225 yards, at 165(longest shot to date) this combo will drop 'em as well as my .308.
