forearm issue on combo
« on: April 18, 2012, 04:04:25 AM »
I have an older 30-30/20 gauge nickle combo.  The forearm fits great on the 30-30 barrel, but is real tight on the 20 gauge barrel.  Worried I might break off the lug for the srew.  Curious as to what can be done that would be beneficial to both.  Thought about opening up the forearm screw hole but then the 30-30 barrel might be too loose.  Any ideas?

Is the barrel lug in the same place as current Handi's?  If so, it's an easy remedy, buy another fore end, and fit it to the 20.  If it's not then I would open the forearm screw hole just a little bit, checking with both barrels, as soon as the 20 fits, stop.  Personally, I wouldn't worry about it, my guess is that the gun wasn't used much with the 20 barrel.  Shoot it a bit with the 20 barrel on, and it might "shoot into" the forearm.  I had a couple of guns like that, eventually the forearm fit better.  Just my 2 cents.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

I also thought I could shoot it in, not sure how many rounds that might equate to, but 100 aint done it yet.

If the 30-30 barrel shoots good the way it is now, I'd certainly not mess with it try to make it fit better on the shotgun barrel, I'd just get another forend for the shotgun barrel and make adjustments on it instead, it only needs to hold the barrel on when the action is open for the shotgun and not be too tight to open the action, forend fit is critical for a rifle tho, too tight or too loose and accuracy goes out the window.  ;)

I have a combo that sounds similar, plated with the captive forearm screw.  Bought about 1980 or so.  The forearm is tight on my shotgun barrel, too.  Don't mess with it.  The rifle was used for many many years and the shotgun almost never.

Take a look at the youth size forearm, IMHO its a better feel for the shotgun, but then I dont care for big beavertail look/feel on one. Having a dedicated forearm is the next best thing to having dedicated frames.
