School Me Please
« on: April 17, 2012, 01:17:58 PM »
Tell me the difference between the SB1 and the SB2 receivers, are shotgun and rifle barrels interchangable?   My first Handi was a 243 many years ago and went to bolt rifles.  What to look for when buying a receiver?  Do you still have to send them back to H&R to get barrels fitted to a receiver?  I'm startin in the first grade here guys so any and all information would be helpful.  Thanks,

Jason is correct all this info is in the FAQ's. ;)

BUT... quickly

1) "the difference between the SB1 and the SB2 receivers" Materials they are made from, The SB2 is stronger to withstand higher pressure from higher intensity calibers. While the SB1 is best suited for the shotguns and lower pressured offerings.

2) "are shotgun and rifle barrels interchangable" To what end?  I mean what do you want/need to do?

3) "What to look for when buying a receiver" SB2 is probably best bet as any caliber or gague san rimfires can be fit to them.

4) "Do you still have to send them back to H&R to get barrels fitted to a receiver?" Well, in a word and because you said "have to" NO. Fitting can be done yourself. The best advice I can give you as a beginner handi owner is to grab a coffee and start reading the FAQ's!

Enjoy,

The simple explanation is SB2's (now serial numbered receivers beginning with the prefix "CBA"), are basically rifle receivers.  They can handle the pressures generated by high power rifle rounds, while the SB1 frames are designed primarily for shotgun, and pistol calibers.
If you want "just one" receiver; buy an SB2 or currently numbered "CBA" receivers, and you can have any H&R barrel (rifle, shotgun, & pistol caliber) fitted to it.  You can't do this if you buy an SB1 (shotgun or pistol caliber) receiver.
As far as "having to send them back to H&R to get barrels fitted to a receiver?", the answer like CW said is no.  You can send the receiver to H&R to get a new barrel fitted or you can buy a barrel in the classifieds and do it yourself.
If you want to get a .22LR barrel fitted, onto an SB2 receiver, you have to get a .22LR Versa Pack barrel.  The VP barrels are the only rimfire barrels that will fire on the SB2 receivers due to the offset bore.  Otherwise, If you want to shoot rimfires, other than the VP barrels, you have to buy the rimfire Sportster frame.
For another explanation see the following link: "How many different frames?"

For more information, I definitely recommend reading the FAQ's sticky.  Hope this helps.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.
