striker pin issue
« on: April 17, 2012, 10:47:54 AM »
well my 357 mag receiver striker pin seems to be to long as it randomly pierces factory ammo 357 primers. The max primers I use ( rem small rifle 7 1/2) are ok probobly cause of how hard they are. How difficult is it to take it apart and grind the back of the pin or should I sent it back to be done?

I would like to know what the pin protrusion is first.

Then if brand new and you have time, if in fact it is too long. Yes return it. If it where mine Isolde simply fix it myself I am handier than I have patience to wait.

Those were factory federal mag cases. Dents are not as bad in max small rifle primers. Should I be concerned or leave well enough alone. The pin is def in longer than any on my other receivers

Again and to clarify, what is the measurment of your pin protrusion?  .035 - .045 is normal. Some have gone to nearly .060 with no problems.

How is its profile? I should not be "sharp".

As mentioned no all primers are created equily. I have been using Rem match SR for over ten years in a Maxi Handi, with zero problems.

I had several pierced primers with factory Dan Wesson 357 Maxi ammo on my SB1 Maxi back in 2004 or so, swapped the frame out for an SB2 and no more primer problems.  So if your frame is an SB1 with the large firing pin, that's probably the problem and best fix is to use a different primer in handloads or change to an SB2 frame. If it's a late model SB1 with the small firing pin, changing primers or ammo is prolly the only option unless the pin is damaged and/or there's too much pin travel which would be rare unless someone has messed with the frame or hammer, normally the problem is too little pin travel, as CW mentioned, some of mine have just over .060" pin exposure, pull trigger, lower hammer slowly while holding the trigger back, measure the pin protrusion thru the standing breech face, I use the tail of my caliper. ;)

It is a sb2 and it is measured at .072. It is a new receiver sent in to receive a 357 talo at which time a trigger job was done on it and all internal parts upgraded. CBA# receiver. Well I will send it back I was trying to save them the work but its getting hot and the off season so i can let it go for a little.

.072 is alot!

You can just buy a new hammer and install if you don't want to wait...  Brownell's should have it.

BUT you may loose the light trigger...  I would not advise just filing the firing pin, like most parts could be surface hardened and could lead to other problems down the road.

The thickness of the top of the hammer will dictate the pin protrusion. So a simple hammer swap will likely cure the issue.

DH#1 - If you don't want to send it back, the removal of the firing pin is a piece of cake.  Info on Perklo for trigger job, just one more retaining pin to get to the firing pin.  That said, I personally  would send it back and let the factory deal with it, since they "upgraded" it.
