New to me 336 30-30
« on: July 08, 2012, 03:21:54 AM »
Just picked up this 1975 model 336 for around $400.00 with shipping. I wanted a 30-30, wanted it to be a Marlin, wanted it pre-safety and wanted it in good shape. I think I did alright. I had a 336 I bought back in 1983 new. I killed several deer with it and loved the rifle, but a case of young and poor syndrome caused me to have to sell it years ago. Been wanting to replace it every since. Heard bad things about the new ones so I decided to look for an older one actually made by Marlin. I figure it's like buying a used Ruger, better than a new one most of the time. Did I do OK?

I've been a 3030 fan, and shooter for way over 50 years, and Marlin makes a good one. At least they used to.

I gave my 336 to a grandson last season.  The 30/30 is an excellent choice for deer/bear, especially in a wooded, mountain areas.  Does a good job..
Incidentally, the "safety" is no problem..you don't have to use it..I didn't; and it was stiff enough that one is not likely to engage it by accident.

There's a set screw behind that safety. Take an Allen wrench and lock it to off. Problem permanently solved. Also someone makes a filler pin for that safety. Take it completely out, and replace it with the fill in.

I love the older Marlin 336's. I had one several years back, won it at a gun show raffle. Ended up trading it for an old 50's Ruger Single Six to replace a .22 Colt revolver someone stole out of my car. Just found another 336, mfg'd in 1981, same great condition as the one pictured, for $300.00 at a local show.  Now I need to find the time to give it a workout at the range.  :D  I know you'll enjoy your rifle.
