Tikka 270 or 7mm-08?
« on: February 03, 2004, 01:01:21 PM »
Ok forgive the obsessive compulsive nature of this post. I just received my Tikka White Tail Hunter 7mm-08 (blued/wood).  I was hoping to find a SS lamiante or a SS synthetic, but to no avail.  Of course, the day after it arrives I stumble accross a Tikka WH 270 SS/syn  (NIB) for the same money.

If you had to choose one over the other as a white tail gun, which would you go with.  We hunt a big lease out in western Oklahoma, with lots of open land and shots of 175-250 yards are the norm.

Do I need help? My wife sure thinks so. But what would men be if we did not have hobbies to occupy our time.

Sincerely,

OUrabmen

You are in tough shape  .  Both are good calibers, although I would prefer the 7m-08 caliber.  As far as choosing between the two, I guess it comes down to if you want a stainless barrel or blue.  I guess if it was me, I would base my decision on caliber rather than barrel material.

I need to tell you right off the bat - I believe in the .270.  The ranges you are suggesting are a piece of cake for a .270.  I use 130 grain or 140 grain bullet for Elk and they are flat and deadly.  The other thing I look at I can buy .270 shells anywhere (even the boonies in the middle of no where) for a very reasonable price.  Even the reloading materials are a bit less expensive.  If the the rifle that you want is a .270 go for it - I really don't think you will be sorry.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Both are excellent cartridges.  However, I have a soft spot in my heart for the 7mm-08 for deer, even at the distances you mentioned.

Their great top of the line deer calibers, I've had both. I kept the 270 for one primary reason.  I can use 130, 140 or 150 grain bullets and get the same point of impact at 100yrd's.  Not many other calibers will do this.

I have both. T- 3 Stainless Synthetic 7-mm08 and model 700 bdl ss dm in the 270. IF you look at the Hornady website at the sst bullet, you will see they are about ballistically the same. I guess you could split hairs ove rhte differences. Can load both of them up and down to handle most hunting situations. Both will handle whitetails at 300 yards with ease, with a good shot. Both of mine shoot Hornady sst bullets sub MOA.

I like the T-3 when I am going to have to do alot of walking in and out or using a climber. It is lite weight at 7 pounds scope and all.

My .270 weighs in a 8.5 pounds. It is more comfortable to shoot off the bench, but neither is a problem with recoil. In fact both are very comfortable to shoot.

When I go hunting I basically toss a coin to choose which gun I take. Both have proven they can wack a deer quick and clean.

Get them both!!!!!

Since its more the rifle with the features you want---I'd get the .270.

The .270 is perfect for your stated purposes-------also ammo is more widely available---more loads----and cheaper.
