What kind of accuracy do you get with a .308 and .30/06 Handi?

What would you pick the 06 or the .308 handi for deer and bear.
With factory ammo what kind of accuracy are you getting. I know reloads would be much better.

seems to depend on what generation you are from, or maybe what your dad had, or even what was your first rifle? lol. both are capable rounds. 30-06 gets it's popularity from military use. .308 gets it's popularity from military use. hmm do you like green apples or red?

Doesn't matter any at all, they will both do the job unless you are going to hunt Polar Bears.  As for accuracy, you can expect anyting from a quarter sized group at 100 yards to having trouble keeping it on a pie plate at 50 yards.  Larry

I have two 30-06s.  One Standard and one Ultra Comp.  Both shoot 3/4" groups if I do my part, with my reloads or Remington Coreloked ammo.  I have not shot a .308 Handi so I can not comment on that one.  The Handi 06s are my go to guns.  I do not hesitate to shoot a Wolf or Coyote at 500 yards with either one.  I've taken both Moose and Caribou with them.  Using them this spring on the Black Bear Bait Station.

I also would not hesitate to shoot a Brown Bear/Grizzly with my Handi 30-06.  And if an old man living in Fort Yukon can kill a Polar Bear with an AR-15 in 5.56, I think my 30-06 will do the same.

As far as versatility using factory ammo, I believe you can't go wrong with a 30'06.  You can get everything from 55 gr. sabots, Managed recoil 125 gr., light magnum loads on up to 220 gr. slugs. 
 
My 30'06 Handi likes Remington Core-lokt 150 gr. like Sourdough's.

I've got a couple of boxes of Barne's 250gr bullets.  That is what the wife was using when she shot a Grizzly that was coming in to take a Moose away from us. 

My pet loads for the Handi's are:  Factory Remington 150 and 180gr Corelokt.  Speer 125gr TNTs in front of 51gr 748.  Sierra 165gr SPBT in front of 58.5gr of IMR-4350.  Nosler 165gr Accubond in front of 61.5gr of RL-22.  Nosler 180gr Partition in front of 58gr RL-22.

I liked that Sierra 165gr boat tail, and have used it for years, but since Nosler came out with the Accubond I am leaning more towards it, with RL-22.  Higher velocity, and good accuracy.  I'm getting better bullet performance with the Accubond at longer ranges.

The two have about the same performance until you get to the 165  weight bullet then the 30-06 tends to  be a little better because of case size.  The short action .308 makes it a little lighter than the long action 30-06. But in the end either will do what you have planed.

With my 308 bull barrel I'm getting 3/4" goups at 100 yards using remington core loc in 150 grains.  Kills dear dead everytime.  Haven't used it on bear.

Thanks for the information folks. Looking around the 06 it stock more locally around town. The 06 seems to be a much smaller package than a bolt rifle. So it looks like an 06 would be my best bet.

I have had both .308 and .30-06 Handi and neither were MOA shooters. I now have a .280 which is by far the most accurate Handi that I have ever owned.

How does it buck the wind. I know many who use the .308 for long range match shooting, but again the gun is built for the accuracy also. What kind of groups are you getting with the 3 calibers?

The 06 is a great all around cartridge, can load light to heavy hunting loads. I know guys in SW AK, that all they hunt with is 7.62x54r 147gr LPS FMJ Ball ammo. They kill brown bear, bou, whales, musk ox. A shooter who does there job connecting.
 
The old 06 seems like ammo and brass are found just about every where.
 
I had read that article on the polar bear. That would make just about anyone wet themselves.
