Playing with my .17HMR
« on: May 22, 2012, 07:32:49 AM »
I just got this gun about a month ago, a CZ-452 "standard" wit 25" barrel and hog back beech wood stock. Out of the box the trigger was much heavier than I like but it was easy enough to replace the spring with a lighter one and it was clean and crisp, overtravel of course since that retracts the bolt stop but my trigger now breaks at 24-26 ounces.
 Initially I had installed a Simmons 22Mag scope, 3-9X32 but early on I decided it deserved something better. I saw that Sportsman's Guide had a sale on the Pentax Gameseeker 4-12X40 and thought that would be just the thing. I was very disappointed in that scope so now the Simmons 3-9X32 in back on the rifle and the Pentax is on its way back to Sportsman's Guide.

I've been testing loads to see what the rifle likes best, shooting five groups of five shots each at 100 yards. I still have some loads yet to try but so far the averages are as follows;
CCI 17 grain TNT hollowpoint--1.34"
Winchester 20 gr. XTP  HP ----1.23"
Federal 17 grain Vmax---------1.40"
Hornady 17 grain Vmax--------1.64"
I also ran all of those over the chronograph and found no great difference among the brands, all equaled or exceeded factory specs, some by 100 fps.
Just out of idle curiosity I also fired four loads on 1/8" mild steel plate, all penetrated the steel, making a clean hole considerably larger than bullet diameter. The 17 grain loads penetrated about 3/8" into the packed dry paper behind the steel and the 20 grain loads went close to 1 1/2"  into the dry paper. The FMJ load was not noticeably different than the XTP hollow point, both broke up completely in the paper.
Here are the steel shots and one target of the accuracy test showing frustrating attempts to zero the Pentax scope, chasing groups  with adjustments of inconsistant value.

These 17's are a hoot to shoot!

Mine also prefers the 15-17g to the heavier 20g bullets. I dont rem group sizes exactly I know it's shoots under 1" with the lighter bullets. The "big" scope helps that's for sure. It's a 6x18x40.

I also have a CZ 452 but mines a LR. And shoots great!  I had this same scope on it for a spell to see just how good it shot. It was real good!  I bought it with the LONG barrel so I could mount a peep site to it. So that's how it's setup now. I like to bring wooden cloths pins and set them up on the target standers of one of the ranges I shoot at. (they allow this). And consists fly send them flying pretty easily at 50 yards.

Of the four loads I have so far given a though test the best average was the Winchester 20 grain but really they all are so close that I have no reason to pick one over any other. The Hornady 17 grain average was spoiled by a single shot which opened that group to 2.5", otherwise it would be right in there with all the others. Every load gave at least one group of 1" or less and, with the exception of that one Hornady group the largest group was 1.9". I still have the Federal 17 grain Vmax, Hornady 20 grain XTP and CCI 20 grain FMJ yet to try.
