Best Off The Shelf 30-30 ammo
« on: March 20, 2012, 11:40:56 AM »
I've used Remington Core-Lokt 150 grain JSP, wondering if there is a better off the shelf  for both deer and hogs limitng the range to 70 yards or less?
Thanks for your comments,
Charlie
Forgot to add that is out of 14" barrel Contender.  Others I've considered are the 170 grain JSP and the 170 JHP.

I like the Federal Premium ammo with Nosler Partition bullets.  I use them in my Marlin and have had good luck in my 12 inch TC barrel.  It started life as a Super 14 but was professionally shortened and re-crowned before I got it.

I've used the same ammo for Whitetails in my Super 14.  They performed well at the ranges I used them (100 yards or less).

Before I started reloading I tried several of the factory loads and Federal Premium were the most accurate.  They were also effective on deer.  I watched the after season sales at our local stores and got some real bargains and wound up with 500 rounds.  For deer I have not even tried reloading.

I found a bunch of the Remington 170 grain soft points that had a good price and have been shootign them out of my 14" T/C
Have not gotten the accuracy (personal - not the gun) to hunt with it yet.
But am looking forward to taking it to NC for a Deer hunt in the near future.

By same ammo I meant Remington Core Lokt 150's.

Thanks all.  I may pick up some Core-Lokt 170s and see how they shoot out of my barrel.

The only reason I haven't tried the 170's is that I have one of the older, six-groove barrels and I think the twist is too slow to handle the heavier bullets.

I don't shoot factory ammo but if I did want to in a 30-30 Contender pistol I'd look for factory ammo that contains 125BT's.  My poor feeble memory is thinking maybe Federal makes such ??? 8) ::) .  Yeah....I know I heard that....don't know if it's so or not but I'd be checking it out, especially with your stated range limits.  Good Shootin'

The only off the shelf 125s I see are hollow points or Remington's reduced recoil SPs.
Never looked at the twist on the barrel before, it is 6 grove, guess I will stick with the 150s.

Thanks al,
Chalire

@Charlie-SA.  Those older, six-groove, TC barrels are supposed to be very accurate.  I know mine is; both with factory ammo and handloads.  It handles cast bullets pretty well too.

Can't spell "all" and can't even spell my own name, how can I expect to hit anything :P   When I do my part accuracy with the Core-Lokt 150 is quite good.

Winchester Power Points CXP2 have worked well for me, should be all you need for deer/black bear !  I know the Nosler partitions are really great, but off the shelf they are more costly..and a deer couldn't be more dead than those I shot with Power Points..DRT.
I will be using my .243 next big game season, and that is where I will handload some 100 gr Nosler Partitions..
