So what knife does everyone use up here.

I carry 2 plus a folding saw.

Browing FTD three blade. Gut hook/caping , saw and skinning blade.
I love this knife. A little fat in the hand but holds an excellent edge.

Schrade 1430T. Single blade with a gut hook built in.
Again, love it. The blade really holds an edge.

I was asked by some Eskimo friends to open the skin on the backs and legs of three caribou. They had never seen a gut hook.  I slipped it under the skin and had all three opened in under five minutes. Hey guys? What next? They were baffled.

I also throw one of my Lansky medium diamond stones in the large pack just in case.

I've been using a Wyoming Knife the past few seasons.  Works pretty good for skinning, but you do have to be careful.  With the short, razor type blade you can slice your hand open before you know it.  I speak from experience!

Currently I carry a Buck Crosslock hunter with that gold titanium coating.  Still getting used to sharpening only one side. Its ok, and the gut hook is fair. Got me through a moose last fall and its light.  I first tried the Browning FTD but the gut hook protruded out of the handle and just wasn't comfortable.  I also carry a Morseth laminated blade with big upsweep. Its pretty heavy so it stays in the boat until I need it.

My friend carries a Buck rubber handle Zipper with gut hook. And my hunting partner carries an old Schrade fixed blade that did over half my moose.  He'd just whip out his diamond steel every so often.

My most favorite knife was a Puma folder (General??) that I wore out. When it was sharp I could do 3 caribou without touching a steel. But it didn't have a finger guard and I nearly lopped off a finger once on a greasy moose.

I'm still looking for the perfect folder - this crosslock is my first buck and I'm not totally sold on it but it's light.  Another friend had an older Browning folder that did VERY well on caribou and bear.
