Saw a pair of mockingbirds today.  Saw a cardinal a week ago, but it was much warmer then.

One disgusting sign of spring in the south is the appearance of house flies.  The one who comes out first is a bigger one and it flies around like a jet, banging into windows.  Hard to kill.  Smart also.
I'm ready for him.  Haven't seen the 2012 release yet.

One sure sign of spring around here in central IL is the farmers out putting on anhydrous, and they were out in force this weekend.  On the bright side, I manged to get lime and some dry fertilizer down on the garden today.  We're in for a spell of warm weather, but we still have a few weeks before plants can go outside - our frost free date is late April, I think.  I should probably look that up sometime. ;D

With the short cold season of Zone 8, I am already setting out squash plants.  We are due for another frost, according to the almanac. but with the spell of warm weather we're having, I'm gonna go ahead and plant.  I have others already started, just in case.  All it costs is a few seed and a little time.
I start everything except peas, beans, and corn indoors and transplant outdoors when the soil temp begins to approach 65-70 degrees.  I have a sun room and a sunny garage, and buy the peat pots & starter thingies in bulk and on closeouts, noy limiyrr on space.  I don't grow onions or peppers; a neighbor plants waaaay too many of those every year and we swap.
I save heirloom seed from the squash, tomatoes, cantaloupes, melons, and edible gourds.  Others I buy from Willhite's or the local feed store.

The final harbingers in this area:
Junebugs (May beetles) are coming out of the ground, pecan trees are budding out, mosquitoes are hatching, wisteria and dogwood are blooming, and the green beans I sowed last week are sprouting.  Life is good.

too early for green beans here, but the squash is sprouting, and the carrots are starting to break through the soil.  Taters are planted too  :)

I just took a chance...I'd gone two tiller-widths around the perimeter of my garden spot and had some leftover seed from last year...we were expecting a good rain and I just broadcast them & let Nature help.  WTH.

Cut my seed red potatoes this morning.  Probably let them harden a few days before planting.  Could have planted 3-4 weeks ago with the mild spring we have had.  My garden is so small that I have to take something out in order to put something in.  Removing my kale today.  Pulled out my mustard and turnip salad a week ago.
Planted some tomato seed indoors.  Thanks to someone here, I was able to find Pink Lady seeds.  Also have some seeds that came from Thomas Jefferson's estate in VA.  They will produce purple fruit.

Well it was 78 here today.  Most of the snow is melted and the frost is coming out of the ground.  Typically we get another blizzard or two...but fingers are crossed.

The  Magnolia will be in full bloom by the middle of the week, with mid 70's temperatures, which is about 3 to 4 weeks early.

The Cardinals never left for winter.  The Robins, Blackbirds, Mockingbirds and Killdeer are back in full force.

Tree Pollen counts are high for March.

The earthworms haven't surfaced yet, but we didn't have enough rain to bring them up.

Farmers are starting to plow, but the Orchard owners are worried about their fruit  buds in this extremely early spring.

I am not comfortable planting anything yet, except the real early seeds, since we can normally still get mild frosts in mid May.  I am also wondering how hot this summer will be.

All in all, this may be a year with a 7 or 8 month growing season.

NOT NORMAL ! !
