416 rimmed Barnes
« on: January 20, 2012, 01:35:52 PM »
I'm would like to get one of my barrels made into a 416 rimmed Barnes. Has anyone had this done? If so who did it? I see CH4D has the reloading dies but I don't see any reamers for it.

I am not familiar with this cartridge..

A search of the web did not turn up much sans those dies you mentioned...

Hmm, bore out a 30-30 to .409 rifle to a groove depth of .416, something like a 1:18 twist rate, and chamber to the .416 Barnes...

nah, not in a handi, but I like the concept of the necked down .45-70

I say save yourself the money for a rebore or stub and do a 35 Greevy Express instead; it's also a 45-70 wildcat. A factory .357 Mag barrel could be rechambered for it.  ;)

Thanks Tim! I got some reading!

There is a complete line of calibers built on the 45/70 case! Its a good idea, .416 is a "different" caliber, might make for a fun project.

Looks like the 416 barnes could use a little help from Mr. Ackley. 8)

What BB said, if you're gonna spend the $130 for a custom reamer, might as well have it done to your specs, you may be able to have the sizing die cut at the same time.

Personally, I'll just stick with my 405 Win loaded to 60kpsi, 300gr spitzers @ 2450fps, more case capacity than the 416 Barnes, 73.8gr water compared to 68.6gr.  ;)

Right O Tim!

When I built my 6.5/06 I had it built around the Partition 125g on a resized 270 case. So tech I have a custom 6.5x270...;)

I had my dies cut to my chamber too. In my case probably was not necessary BUT after 100 rounds the gun will shoot 5/8-3/4" groups!!

Not if you use the .45-90 case.   ;D

How about a pic of the .405-120 rifle and some ballastic info?   Sounds like this chambering might make a nice squirrel rifle for Tyler. 8)

I did some more searching and found some dies and reamer for a 416-348. How much powder would it hold? I have a handi in 405 win. It's very accurate and I like it alot. Just want something different with a nice rim.

The 416-348 is a 416 GNR.

Could a handi barrel and frame handle this?

Maybe if you keep the pressure under 50kpsi, the large case head is the killer at .548", breech thrust at 50kpsi is 11793lbs, the 500S&W at 50kpsi is ~11000lbs for comparison, the bottlenecked case makes it even more intense on the action.
