Something you have not seen before... mosin turned scout rifle
« on: January 15, 2012, 08:36:27 PM »

This is a modification ive had laid out for quite a while, just never got around to it for some reason. My favorite rifles are the various nagant carbines, but mine are too nice to take into the woods so i used a much more common 91/30 for this. This started as a '38 tula, numbers match except the floorplate... i wanted a numbers matching gun for this since its going to get shot a lot and i feel better knowing the bolt is original to the gun. Originally i wasnt going to refinish the stock, but the brake cleaner i was using to remove the cosmoline splashed onto the stock and took the finish down to the bare wood instantly in that spot. Once i started cleaning off the finish i was glad i did, i liked how the grain looked on this stock.
I had originally planned to cut the barrel to 16.5, but decided on 17.5 once i took some measurements. I didnt do much work to the stock other than cutting it down, really all i did was fill in the cleaning rod channel and handguard spring channel plus sand out the ridge where the rear hand guard clip was. Its finished for now, but all the metal will be getting done with something more durable once i have my air compressor set back up. And i think ill do a better top coat on the stock, whats on there is really thin and probably wont last long.

I got to looking on amazon the other night and found a deal i couldnt refuse on a bsa pistol scope, so i ordered it and a mount(not crazy about the mounts design, will get a better one later on). So, here is my version of a mosin nagant scout rifle.

It will be getting threaded for a flash suppressor in the next few weeks too...it needs one BAD

I had a scope mount like that that didnt work worth a darn.  If you slide the rear sight off its groove you can slide a scope mount for a .22 rail on there.  It is much more secure than the one you have pictured, for me anyways.

A 17.5" barrel on a Mosin? Geeezzzzz... you're going to singe yer eyebrows. The M44 is bad enough. For pleasant shooting, get a M91/30...

That is a great looking scout rifle. I have been having an itch to do something similar to one myself. I have modified one for hunting and made it into a nice usable rifle. I really like the idea of a scout rilfe. Just need to find me another one for the right price!

Thanks for the comments guys, im supposed to be going to the range with it wed. afternoon if the weathers ok.
As to the scope mount, next one will be a piece of steel rail welded to the sight base.

For the scope mount do what quasne.incsays to do.  Take off the rear sight base and use the dovetail with a one piece .22 mount.  Save the sight pins and notch through the one piece mount to make it even more secure of a mount on the mosin.  Cheap and a solid way to go.

I do not want to go that route, on the ones ive disassembled the grooves are not evenly cut. I know the factory base is  level. I would have to destroy the base to get it off, the head of the rear screw is twisted off. I would have to use a mill to remove it and i do not have access to one right now.

Why is this in my thread? my gun is tastefully done, not covered in the tacticool garbage. I cannot stand that type of stuff.

  Hey slngblde:
Good looking scout rifle. Good looking stockwork too. I have done a couple of scout type rifles and they are fun, except for muzzle blast, double hearing protection.
I have a book that showed how to make a mount for the rear sight base without destroying the base. I milled one out of a high weaver base for a old beater 98 mauser. I also did a mod 99 arisaka 17" bbl and put a scope on it,  cut and rewelded the bolt handle for clearance, it too was a beater rifle, got it for 6.oo a long time ago. It is very lightweight and not really accurate, the mauser has a red dot scope on it and is fairly accurate, probably due to the red dot scope.
Let me know how your rifle shoots with the short bbl. I have been told that the nagant has progressive rifling twist and I am curious to know it effects accuracy?
  enjoyed looking at the nagant,
  HM

Looks like its going to probably be the weekend before i get to shoot it, weathers too iffy tomorrow and too windy wednesday. Story of my life... get new toys ready to go and have to wait to shoot them. Ill be trying out a new to me m44 as well. I have 2 now and whichever is the better shooter stays and the other goes... im running out of room quick. Ive got 14 long guns crammed into a space meant for 10 i think.

As they say, "there's no accounting for taste." Your rifle will also be seen as tasteless by some.

Great looking gun, for minimum investment. Lots of bang for the buck.  :) Hope it shoots well for you.

   Hmmm, interesting concept.  Nicely done.

I would go ahead and turn down the bolt handle.

I would also shorten the front of the forestock.

My friend got a MN 1891/30 and wanted to scope it but didn't want to drill the receiver or use the worthless UTG leaf mount. He removed the rear sight base then fired up his mill to make a block that would fit on the groove on the barrel. Next the block was drilled so that the original rear sight base pins could be used to secure it.  He then added an ~1" L shaped extension on it front & rear to help support a longer section of picatinny rail. This gave him about 4" of picatinny rail to mount his scout scope. I'm trying to get him to license out that design.
