Anybody ever
« on: January 21, 2012, 05:04:18 AM »
shot a Savage 2400 or other combination gun or double rifle with "separated" barrels fast enough to heat up the rifle barrel(s)?  I wonder if the group will "walk" as the barrel heats up.

Obviously a theoretical question, since most of these are for hunting that doesn't involve shooting lots of shots fast, but I wonder if you used a .222 or other varmint cartridge barrel for, say, prairie dogs, you might get "wandering" bullets.  (I can't reload fast enough to heat up even the barrel of my .308).

Hey Mike

Great question.  When ever I sight in a combo gun I like the barrel to cool to the point of being a cold bore shot.  Every hunting situation I have been has the first shot has been a cold bore shot.  Drillingman has posted pictures of his 30-06 three shot group where the Valmet quick release scope mount was removed then reinstalled inbetween shots.  I rememeber the group being very tight.

Yeah, Doug, I read ya.  With a single shot or single rifle barreled combo, you don't really CARE where the third shot is gonna go, let alone the fifth or tenth.  Because 99% of the time the game is gone by the time you could shoot the third one.

When I check zero on these guns before hunting season, I shoot two shots as quick as I can from a cold bore.  If they go right, the gun goes back in the case ready for the season.

Here's the target Doug was refering to,

I've never seen a smaller cartridge/2400 or 412 heat up the bbls enough for the groups to move around.  Perhaps it would if enough shots were fired though?

When sighting in my Baikal Izh-94 the 30-06 barrel did walk, I believe it was up and tot he left.

But I dont have that gun any more...

I'll have to look at a Baikal and see if the barrel attachment is significantly different from the Valmet system.  Barrel diameter might have something to do with it, too.

Maybe there's a member with four hands who can fire a combo faster than I can....for me, it is not the gun for "firepower."

Good morning
It is not real practicle but if you load full cases of 2F BP I bet-cha you can get them barrels hot alot faster.  I shoot RB out of my FoxB 12 bore.  Granted those are thinnish barrels compared to a real double.  But with 135 grains of 2F it only takes 6 rounds out each side to bring temp up to hotter than I want to hold on to.  At 35 yards I cannot tell any real difference as I do not have rifle sights on it and all I wanted was a 35 yard smasher.
