35 Whelen Scores it's first kill
« on: December 26, 2011, 01:58:49 PM »
Well my son is back from collage and he took off with his new 35 Whelen Handy this afternoon. He killed a small buck at a 148 steps. This was his first shot with it as I got it ready for him while he was at school . I haven't seen the pics yet but the 200 gr Hornaday Spire Point went right through the rib cage just behind the shoulder leaving about a 3" hole. The buck went straight down and my son called about a minute later . I guess this rifle will have a hallowed place in his vault. I loaded 56grs of H4895 ,Remington Large Rifle Primers ,and Remington brass . Gee I might have to get one now and I was leaning toward a 45-70 .

Figuring 2 1/2 feet per step, that's 370' or 123 yards.  Sounds good to me!

I used to shoot 250gr. Core Lokt's in my Whelen. It'll kill the hell out of deer.
Congrats to your son... now you need to get one for yourself. ;)

CONGRATS CJ!!!

A 3" hole huh! WOW!

I also like the 200g Spitzer for deer! I have used it allot in the 358W and seemed natural when I moved to the Whelen. I like the looks of the 250g RN better and for my Shooting/Hunting I bet it would be better. But It simply worked so good in the 358... I will be adding a 356 Win Soon and that same 200g Horady Spitzer will be my go to bullet for it as well!!

The 35 Whelen will pole-ax any thing that walks, crawls or flies on this Continent.

The boy is out again today and he has passed up some does (which are legal) . Based on his text I think he will stop hunting antlers as it gets closer to dark . Oh to be young again!
