New 44 Mag. is tight
« on: December 28, 2011, 12:33:29 PM »
I just picked a brand new .44 Mag. Handi. from Gander Mountain yesterday and it is very tight. To open it I have to slap the barrel hard while holding down the release button. Does anyone know an easy way to loosen it up?   All my other extractor type Handis just fall open when you push the release button.  I plan on having the barrel cut down to 17"  and I can not decide whether to scope this gun or have sights installed. Any thoughts would be welcome. I hunt in western NYS. So my shots are less than 100 yards.  Thanks for the help.

Could be a poor fitting forend. I had one like that. It pushed way too tight against the receiver and made it extremely difficult to open. I sanded the forend a little bit at a time until it loosened up.

I had one the same way, after I shot it a few times it opened easy after that. Have you shot it yet?

I tried 40 rounds of 45-70 through mine and it showed no signs of breaking in. I removed the forend and spacer and whisked a smidgeon off the back end in the mitre saw. Fits fine now.

That isn't so easy on a synthetic forend, it takes some careful sanding of the contact surface of the built in spacer or a change in the mounting hole. I use a 1" sanding drum in the mini-mill. Hunterwinco has the opposite problem, his is too loose.

Take the forearm off and put a dab of grease on it where it contacts the frame. You'll be surprised how much easier it opens. ;)

I use paraffin or beeswax, it doesn't attract dirt like grease will, a dry lube will work too.  ;)

I forgot about beeswax... I have used that also with good results. :)  Most of the time I use a dab of white lithium grease.

Ah! Pretty obvious I was thinking wood. Wasn't it? Thanks for the correction. :)
