Contender scores!
« on: December 19, 2011, 10:31:16 AM »
Shot a small buck today with my Contender in 7-30 Waters.   ;D   Couldn't be happier with the performance.  I just started hand loading for it this year and I have to say the Nosler Ballistic tip made a MASSIVE hole.  I think I am going to have to rethink my bullet choice.

Tiny little hole going in then it hit a bone and did not exit.  Really didn't matter because that deer was not going anywhere.  When I cleaned it I had to throw away the entire front shoulder.  Both lungs were a pulverized mess and the bullet had fragmented into little pieces.

Yep,X2 on the 7-30 Waters choice,I shot my 1st Contender deer with that one too-almost the same results...... However-"dead is dead" . I'd maybe back off the powder a little though rather than change the load altogether. Mine was a left to right walker shot just behind the right shoulder-in between ribs, smashed the heart and broke the opposing side rib on exit into the far shoulder where the bullet was found against the hide. surely impressed the hack outa me at 105 yds.

Are you using a rifle barrel or pistol barrel? I use the 7-30 in a 14" T/C barrel with the 120 gr Nosler BT and Hornady SP, and haven't had damage like that. I usually hit neck shots or behind the shoulder on broadside shots as that takes out the lungs without damaging the shoulders. Guessing you're running at a faster velocity than mine.

I am running a 15" pistol barrel.  It is a max load of Varget behind a 140gr Nosler Ballistic tip from the TC Reloading manual.

Congratulations!  :D

Heck the Nosler BT doesn't make that kind hole in my .308win 24" Encore.

I don't know what everybody gets upset about when a bullet performs like it is supposed to. You did not loose all that much REAL meat on that deer. The only REAL meat really worth fooling with is the triceps muscle on a deer front shoulder. The rest is just filled with that plastic like stuff that when cooked is like eating tough plastic.

I am happy with the perfomance. I would have preferred a pass thru but i hit a bone. That deer was DRT. Can't ask for better than that.
