"sweet spot" for Winchester boss?
« on: December 01, 2003, 08:26:47 AM »
I am looking for sweet spot adjustments for the 264 mag caliber. Winchester suggests 3.0 be used for 140gr. bullets but I was using 4.2 and it was shooting very accurate. I have moved down to 120gr. and can't find the proper adjustment. Can anyone help me with these boss adjustments?

I have the same gun in .300 Win Mag and can also tell you that the recommended sweet spots were not perfect - close, but not perfect.  I got groups soo tight that the bullets were almost in the same hole - and that's with factory PMC 180 grain X-Bullets.

I have a card that came with the gun - the one that tells you the preferred sweet spots.  However, there is no listing for a 120 grain bullet.

As such, you can do one of two things:

1)  Call Winchester (Or Browning, since both are owned by the same parent company) and ask if they have a listing for the 120 bullet. (That's what I did for a specific bullet weight for my .300)

2)  Just forget about the "recommended" sweet spot and just use trial and error.  Sooner or later I'm sure that you'll find it.

If I am not mistaken, Browning list the sweetspots for the boss on their website. I was considering buying a stainlees stalker in 7 mag. It was used and did not come with any paper work, so I was interested to the point of finding the information. I am almost positive it is there though.

Good Luck!

Well, Winchester list the sweet spot setting for 140gr. bullet on their site for the 264 mag. They do no list the right setting for 120gr. though, and I did call them and I was told that the only bullet they ever did test for in the 264 mag was the 140gr. bullets. They list the sweet spot for 140gr. bullets as 3.0 but I saw that it shot exceptionally good with the 140gr. at 4.25 and I finally found it shoots descent with 120gr. at 2.0 but I couldn't find a setting that shoots quite as accurate as the 140gr. which leads me to beleive that my rifle just likes the 140gr. better.

That very well could be.  Does that mean that you decided on shooting 140 grain bullets?  Have you decided on the Partitions?

Yes, I finally decided on going with the 140gr. partitions. I got to try them out last week on a 6pt. I have to say that I am greatly impressed with the performance of this bullet in the 264 Win Mag. I hit the deer in the front shoulder broad side and it shattered the shoulder, passed through both lungs, and was deflected through the backbone. It did all this and still retained alot of weight which is something that I have not been able to do with any other bullet in this fast caliber.

Sounds like your .264 found some candy.  Yea, I thought you would like the 140 partitions.  How well do they group for you?

My father shot it and put three shots pretty close. I took it and took 2 shots at 110 yards and put both bullets in the same hole. I don't know if it would do that without the boss, but once I got it adjusted it will shoot the Partitions alot tighter than it would the BT's. If I try anything new for next year it would probably be the Barnes X bullet which I have been looking into but seems there are alot of mixed reactions from different people I talk to about this bullet.

You are right about the Barnes X - they group very well in some guns, but very bad in others.  I can't explain why, but I know they do.

In my 300 Win Mag, I can place 3 Barnes X so tight that they touch each other.  The other thing that you should know about the X is that they generally need more velocity to open up.  As such, you should use lighter bullets.  However, this should not be a problem because the X bullet maintains very, very close to 100% of its weight.  In my .300 Win Mag, shooting a 180 X is like shooting a 200 Nosler Partition, or even a Trophy Bonded.  Even in my .30-06 with 165 grain Barnes X, it has ALWAYS fully penetrated deer and hogs.  On just an educated guess, I would think that a .264WM (of which I also own, but have not yet shot) should shoot Barnes X in the 120 grain range or so.

Oh, BTW, remember that my .300 also has the BOSS.  I forgot to say that, at least in my gun, the 180 grain Barnes X was VERY sensitive to BOSS adjustments.  Keep it set at its desired setting, and its accuracy is .5 MOA.....move it just a bit, and the groups open up to over 1.0 MOA.
