High Standard Sport-King
« on: November 24, 2010, 01:21:24 PM »
Yesterday I went to a town about 30 miles from where I live, but almost never have occasion to go there.
I walked into a downtown pawn and there was a High Standard Sport-King with both a 4 1/2 and a 6 3/4 barrels. Made an offer of $400 OTD, he whispered to the manager a few seconds and said OK. Brought it home and ran swabs thru the barrels and shot 50 rounds thru each barrell. Grouped better than my 617, 10 shot.
Did a search and found that it was made in 1951/1953 range.
Did a field strip and cleaned what I could last nite, then put another 50 thru each barrel this morning. Very nice trigger. A little slack, than bam. I need to find instructions on how to take it completely down, still a lot of grunge.
Holster wear on both barrels and one side of the slide, but not bad, Just a couple of very small chips in the plastic grips.
I have never had a .22 auto before and I am going to like it.
Only reference so far is GB. About the same as I paid, or a little less, for either the 4 1/2 or 6 3/4 barrel, but only one was listed with both barrels. It is nicer than mine and has the box and all documents it came with. Wanting $695 for it.

You did real well at that price for a HS with two barrels. High Standard made the best .22 autos ever manufactured in this country.

When I shot NRA Bullseye competition 20 some yrs ago the High Standards were well represented in our winner's circle. Of course, everyone wanted, and usually ended up with, the fancier models, but the Sport King in capable hands could shoot right up there for scores.
You scored a true classic, and with both barrels it is even better. Enjoy!

I have a Sport King, circa 1974 that I bought brand new, with 4-1/2 inch barrel.
My High Standard, hands-down, has the best trigger of ANY auto pistol that I own.

I just wish that I could have also bought a new HS Victor way back when.  ;)

Enjoy that classic!

Nice job!  I bought my HS Victor new in 1983 for I think $375 (not sure though).  Great guns!

+1 - Since the frames are prone to cracking, near the magazine well/barrel seat junction.

Yep, my HD Military (c. 1947) that I've had since my grandpa gave it to me in the mid 50's has far outshined almost all the other 22 rimfire auto pistol's I've ever owned (a bunch of them)... all the Ruger MK I's/II's, AMT Lightning's, Beretta's, Colt Woodsman's, etc.    All except for an early Browning Challenger that was a tad more accurate, and the Colt Ace (but only because it was rare, mint and a ball to shoot).    The HD Military is the only one I still have - almost like a part of me after about 55-56 years even though I haven't shot it for years.

They are the best 22 handgun ever made bar NONE!  A woodsman or a kit gun cannot see its tail lights.

Ladobe, I just couldn't warm up to the Rugers but I just put a Colt conversion kit on a Caspian/Foster frame that tickles my heart. I tryed to use all parts I've accumulated for years.
