My Stub question
« on: October 27, 2011, 09:56:52 AM »
Now mind you, I'm just thinking here...  ;)

What would one think was the minimum gauge shotgun barrel that would be suitable as a stub for a 50 caliber barrel?  A barrel that would chamber a cartridge with about a .515 ID case and develop pressure in the... oh I don't know, lets just through out 40K at the extreme top end?   ???

This is, of course, just idle curiosity...  ;D

I think it would be safer to use a centerfire barrel ,shotgun barrels are mild steel compared to centerfire barrels
handi rifles- 22 mag      22 hornet    223      7mm-08      308 chip shot     30-30 x2     30-06 shorty      358 cheez whiz     357 max     35 remington     375-08    410 rifled slug     454 casull     460 s&w     45 smokeless muzzleloader x2     45-70    50 huntsman    50-70 government shikari     20 ga.ush     12 ga.ush    12 ga.3 1/2     10 ga.imp.cyl. slug gun

nononono!  Of course the barrel would be a centerfire barrel!   ;D   And an SB2 Action!   ;)     The shotgun part would only be the stub to hold the new barrel.

Or do you mean use a centerfire barrel for the stub?   ???   I hadn't thought about that...  :-\   But if one were considering that it would seem easier to just rebore, rerifle and rechamber the rifle barrel.

I meant the stub should be a centerfire barrel drilled out

I'd give JES a call, he does rebores for less than a stub will cost, a 32" BC barrel would make a dandy 50-140 Express, that one has been in the back of my mind ever since I acquired my last BC barrel a couple years ago!  ;)  8)

Again, IF I was thinking about such, I learned with my 45-120 that 32" is just to long for me.   :-\  28" may prove to be just about right, but them BC/TC barrels are mighty pricey.  On top of that you got to pay to get them cut and crowned.  :(  Now if someone who was thinking about this had an extra barrel laying around that he couldn't rebore for a 9.3x74R, oh I don't know, say a 26" .280, that might be doable...  :)

Doable especially if that someone is motivated by the fact that he just happens to have a set of RCBS 50-140 dies laying around; thanks to a member like BikerBeans.  Now there is a man who is mindfull of his fellow member's wants and desires!   :-*  Or maybe a temptor in disguise!   ???
