45-70 contender
« on: October 22, 2011, 09:48:14 AM »
Wondering if any of ya'll had one and how you liked it.  I have a 10" 44 mag barrel and was thinking of getting a 14" MT 45-70 for hunting.  Have alot of reloading stuff for the 45-70 since I already own a marlin guide gun.  Just wondering hom much more recoil to expect with the 45-70 ove rthe 44 mag.  I'm not really recoil sensitive as i own alot of big bores, 454 casull, 375 H&H's, 45-70 and such.  Also, would the 45-70 give me an advantage of range over the 44 mag or would i be bettor off to stick with what i have.

I had one built by SSK before T/C made them.  It was 12" and Magnaported.  I loved it.  Highly accurate!

I have a 16 inch 45-70 and I like it.  Loaded with 300 or 350 grain bullets at "trap door" levels it is not uncomfortable to shoot. However it does have more recoil than my 44 mags do.  I use mine for woods hunting and carrying on an ATV during hunting season.  To be honest for what I use it for I could get along just as well with the 44 mag.

I'll probably get one.  It'll be fun to try out.  I'm sure earplugs are a must even hunting.  If its anything like my ported guide gun, its LOUD!

I have a Super 14 with the muzzle tamer and it is indeed loud.  Earplugs are a must.
