Best pistol scope
« on: October 02, 2011, 03:42:50 PM »
I have a 44 mag 10" contender that i want to scope!  I have a S&W 1.5-7 scope and it is horrible.  I have shot a contender with a vari x leupold as well as a fixed 2x burris.  I will we hunting mostly in the swamp and farthest shot would be 75 or so yards.  What would ya'll suggest?  Fixed 2, 4, or vari and what brand?  I really liked the leopold vari, but they are high, just wanted to see if something was comparable withought spending 500 bucks.  Thanks

J.D. Jones reccomended the bushnell 3200 elite to me for my 358 JDJ.  It's supposed to handle recoil well and that 10" has a lot of jump.  I think the 2x6 is around $285.  It's more power than what you might need, but it's better to have it and not need it!  Hope this helps.

Not as highly reguarded, but I have a Simmons Prohunter on my 460.  It's held up to 60 or so shots of some very painful loads.  Before that it was on a 44 mag SRH that shot hot loads.  Maybe it's a fluke, but it's worked out very well for me.

If you can afford more, optics are one thing you should never skimp on.  Bushnell or Leupold are probably the best names out there.

J. D. Jones recommended the Bushnell Elite and the Leupold 2.5-8X scope to me.  Most of my handgun scopes are Leupolds; I've broken a few but Leupold has always fixed them promptly at no charge.  For shooting at up to 100 yards, I'd recommend at least a 4X scope.

Since you say the farthest shot will be 75 yds., I believe that the Leupold 2X or 4X can't be beaten. I prefer the 4X. I have many more than a dozen of the 2 types in service, a couple for more than 20 years, with never a problem. The one on the bottom in the photo below is a .44 Magnum, with a 20-some year old 2X Leupold mounted.

+1 for Leupold.. I buy Leupold first.   That said I like the Burris too.  Really like the 3-12 and 10X Burris on my varmint TC barrels.  Need to note that the 3-12 and 10 Burris are intermediate eye relief things.   Actually ended up with a Bushnell 2-6 in a trade that has turned out to be a fine little scope too.

2x fixed Leupold or Burris. VOE talkin'!  A straight 2x will give you a much wider Field Of View @ 75 yds than a 4x.  What good is magnification if a deer is standing there looking at you, and you can't find it in your scope?

From long experience using all of these brand/models mentioned on handcannons... the first name in big game pistol scopes for me is the Tasco Pro Class in 1.5-4X, 4X or 6X depending on what your circumstance dictate.   It's hard to beat their converging dot reticle for very fast target acquisition on standing and especially running shots, their 30mm tube makes them plenty bright for early/late light conditions, no handcannon will hurt them and they can be found for a third to less than half what they cost new when they were made.   My second choice would be an older model Burris 2-7, third a Leupold 2X or 4X.   FWIW
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

My favorite pistol scope is an old Burris 3x AO.  If you can find the posi-lock, even better.  Otherwise old Tasco 4x Pro class 30mm tube AOs.

Have a TC Hawken scope on a rifle.  Very solid, compact and good optics.  They make the pistols so should know how to build a scope for them.  None of these were cheap but used were alot less than new retail.

I have 4 bushnell elite fire fly 2-6  on four of my barrells and I just got a used burris with ballisttic plex . I really like it. Ill slowly switch them over. I  think both are good but the burris is better.  I gave up on the 44 mag for deer,   the 35 rem and my 7-30 waters  are what I use when I track.

A variable scope for handgun hunting is useless.  Especially your outfit, with the .44 mag.   A 2x scope is good enough for in the woods.  Your rig will be great for 75 yds or less.  I am speaking from experience.  I have many different scopes, but find the Burris scope has the best target acquisition of the bunch.  I had a Leupold 2x on my .44 once and had a hard time finding the deer in the scope!  I switched after that problem.

Just another voice in the crowd!!!
