Long time lurker finally got my own H&R!
« on: October 16, 2011, 07:37:17 PM »
I've been eyeballing handi's for years and never had the free resources to get one.  I finally had the funds available and when I stopped by walmart tonight they had a 270 win with scope on clearance for $270 (yeah cool eh, $1 per .001").  I'd seen the rifle many times over the last year when I was shopping there and thought this was an omen for sure.  So a trip of just checking it out turned into buying in a heartbeat.   Can't wait to fire it.  Any pre-firing breakin advice (i'll search too)?

I am going to get a shotgun barrel for it, in a modified choke, but can't decide between 28" 12ga or 26" 20ga.  Intend for use in everything: upland, fowl and skeet.  Budget only allows for one barrel.

Its good to be in the club.

Welcome to the club... er... Handi Support Group. Just so you know there are only a rare few known examples of folks being cured of handiholism, but a general cure is not known at this time.  :o

On the other hand, very few seem to be looking for a cure anyway.  ;)

tighten scope base with loctite on all screws. will save you ammo. mine was loose and took 40 rounds to figure out why it would not group. plan on getting a trigger job done .

good luck,

270 is a good do-it-all choice. If I got only one shotgun barrel, I would go for the 20 over the 28. I had the 28 on my handi; the shells cost a lot more than the 20, are harder to find, and come in fewer choices than the 20.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

Hi and welcome.  Best of luck with your new Handi.  My H&R shotguns are both 22 inch, and for rabbits, squirrel and grouse in the bush where shots are close, they're wonderful.  Light and fast swinging.

The only thing needed is to put an O-ring under the forearm.  Take the Forearm off, go to a ggod hardware store, find an O-ring that will fit over the metal lug on the bottom of the barrel.  Slip the O-ring on, put the forearm back in place, then start shooting.  The O-ring will free float the barrel sort of, but makes a differance.

Sometimes you need a trigger job, sometimes you don't.  But first off just shoot it, the more you shoot it the better it gets.  After you have shot it a bit you will know if you need a trigger job or not.  About half of mine have had trigger jobs the others have not.  Due to having a transfer bar, you need to make sure you pull the trigger all the way back, every shot.  Otherwise the transfer bar will not come up and fire the gun.

With the 130 or the 140gr bullets, your effective range is over 450 yards. So with practice it can make a very good collector of game.  You do your part and you will be very happy with that gun.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Welcome.
I also say pick up a couple box's of 130gr Federal PowerShoks while your there. They shot well in the handful of 270 Handi's I owned. Good brass and caliber to work with.

I have had many appointments to get checked for CRS but I have never remembered to go to any of them.  I don't understand why he would want a 12" 28 ga barrel.  ::)

BB, 'everybody knows' the 12 is the only real gauge  ;) (dont tell anybody that I love my 20s).
+1 on the scope & mount; whoever put it together probably had a screwdriver and none to little experience. Take the rail right off and start from scratch.

I personally like the 20Ga better than the 12Ga, but that said, if one barrel is all you can afford at this time, get the 12Ga.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Thanks for the reply's.  I will perform all suggestions for sure.

I'm thinking the 12ga is the way to go since a while back I found a 600jr reloader (needs love) at the thrift store for $4 that is set up for 12.  Going to pass on the 12" 28 too, lol.   Going to strip it down for shipping this weekend and get the 28" 12ga barrel.  But now I'm kicking around getting a 223 barrel as well.  Damn guns going to take all my money (but I like it).

Also, today at the thrift store I found a mint condition Lee single loader kit with all parts in a... wait for it.... 270 Win!  Paid a buck for it, hows that for some weird bit o' chance?   If you had to buy a single bin of powder and a box of bullets for all purpose reliable hunting what would your combo be?  I would like to dial in a combo that suits the gun and put this little loader to work.  Guess I'll start researching the bullet building.  The first rounds I bought are Federal Powershoks with a 150gr soft point.  Probably going to use lighter bullets after this box.

My Handi 22" 270 Win likes the Rem Core Lokt 130 grain bullets. It also likes a mid level powder charge.
