Due to lack of response, I called Mossberg. Mag tube is screwed in with a dab of red lock-tite! Anybody got any ideas on what kind of wrench to use on the mag tube after I heat the receiver to loosen the lock-tite?

1. Be prepared to replace the entire mag tube, they are in the receiver tight and sometimes will collapse.
2. Make a plug that will fit inside the tube to support it. I use a strap wrench with a rubber strap. Using a heat gun, heat up the receiver near the tube to about 350F. I use a melt stick that melts at 350F ( you can get these at a weld supply ) Once you have it heated try moving the tube with the strap wrench with the plug in place, and make sure that the magazine follower is pushed way up the tube so it doesn't melt.
I've done these before and had good luck with this method about 75% of the time. Sometimes the tube buckles and you have to replace it. Use a drop of BLUE locktite to reassemble.

I have disassembled at least 15 mossberg 500s, never had a problem removing the mag tube. Also have yet to see one with red loctite, my newest one had a touch of blue loctite but it was still fairly easy to remove. No heat was needed. I just use a pair of knipex "cobra" jaw slip joint pliers and if your careful they wont damage or leave a mark on the tube. That was the only one that required tools to remove, most come right out with a strong twist of the wrist.

Thanks rebel49 and slngblde. When I called Mossberg, I was told that they used red locktite on the mag tube threads. I did try to un-screw the mag tube before I called, but was un-succsesful(sp?). Sounds like my best bet would be to order a spare mag tube just to be on the safe side.

You don't need a new mag tube.  I took mine out of a Maverick 88.  It's almost the same gun.  Since it was all rusty anyhow I used Channel Locks with a rag.  If your worried about finish, I would use one of those rubber strap wrenches.  It is standard right hand threads.

Thanks STUMPJMPR. Looks like I need to get a strap wrench and a 350degree melt stick.

I would try it without heating.  I know the maverick and a aluminum receiver.  I assume the mossberg is as well.  Aluminum is a funny material when it comes to heat.  Too much heat and you can ruin it fast.

Thanks for the heads-up, STUMPJMPR. Just the strap wrench to start, if no joy then I might have a gunsmith take a look at it. I don't want to bugger it up!
