Satin Nickel Commander Date
« on: November 30, 2003, 12:52:05 AM »
I am trying to determine the date of manufacture for my Commander, SN# 70BS221XX, and am also wondering if anyone knows where I can find a fixed rear sight for it in satin nickel? Thanks for all your assistance, regards from Charlie in NC

Colt Series 70

Your Colt Commander (steel frame) Series 70 was first made in Satin Nickle in 1970 (SURPRISE!  SURPRISE!)  So, middle-to-late 1970's would be my estimate.  It was made with the distinctive collet-type barrel bushing and discontinued with the introduction of the Series 80 model with firing pin block.

That finish was "electroless nickle" and Colt marketed it as "satin nickle"

As for a rear sight replacement, try Gun Parts Corporation (formerly Numrich Arms) in New York City.  They have a website.

Book says your Colt was made from 1981 to 1983 from having prefix of 70B.
Hope this helps some.
