I have an Ultra in 223 with the varmint weight barrel, old 1:12 twist. I had a Weaver V9 3x9 scope on it, and the one time I've shot it, it did pretty decent at 50yds with cheapo Herters Russian ammo.

Today I picked up a Simmons 44mag 6.5x20x44 scope with turrets and mil dot reticle.  I'd taken the Weaver off with the intent of putting the Simmons on in its place, but now I'm wondering if I should leave the 223 barrel equipped with the Weaver and get a new barrel for the Simmons. 

Before we get into the "new toy" recommendations, is the varmint 223 barrel with 1:12 twist capable of accuracy deserving of a 6.5x20x44 scope?  Ultimately I haven't spent much money so far, so it's not like anything is getting wasted.  I suppose I should mount the Simmons and shoot some good quality ammo to see what groups I get then decide.

Now, let's just say that I want a new barrel.  What would be a good fit for the high power of the Simmons?  I think 22-250 and 25-06 would probably be able to use the higher magnification, but my primary purpose for the rifle is a plinker and fun gun. Don't want to get into anything that costs a lot to shoot.  Does anyone have the 308 bull barrel?  I reload 308 for my AR-10.

Whatever you have to offer both on the older 223 barrels with the slower twist or on current barrels that would make sense with a high power scope.

i have the same scope on mine, 1in9 twist still working on load but 60 gr hndy shows lots of promise. my suggestion would be mount it up grab some wwb 40gr's and go shootin. should be a great combo!

Well........I use a 20X on my .22LR; it is really sweet for shooting at bugs on 200yd. steel rams.

gcrank, I gotcha beat.  I have a 200 power Celestron on my Daisey Red Ryder ::) ::)   Seriously, I put a 6-24 on my 22-250 and find that I seldom, if ever, push it beyond 9 or 10 power, except for double checking a target.  For me, running it above 10 power does nothing but make it harder to locate a target, makes the target in the cross hairs wobbly and cuts down on the brightness and clarity.  Today, most of my rifles wear fixed 4 power or 3-9s, and those are set at about 4 power.

got  a 10X40  on  my 223 handi


use it  more as a spotting scope than a rifle


was  shooting  great........then started  shooting patterns  one day
not sure if it was the gun  or  me  getting burn out that day
4 years  ago......not shot it since


time to try it again  ...i think

Pete, I dont shoot that 14+ pound target .22 offhand for those 'longish' shots, but off a bench or crosssticks and reading the wind right I can 'aim small'. It is really something to watch the tail of the bullet arch in and maybe over from the wind, then twack, right in the zone  ;D (or not  :'( !). The steel doesnt run around on me out there.........
If I had a long range varminter (the OP's .223, for instance) and within his fun shooting criteria, I would go for that variable he has in a blink.

Try the wincherster white box 45 grain JHP in your 1/12  223 It works great in mine.

I say put that 44Mag scope on your Ultra and see what it can really do. You maybe surprised. I have the same barrel, 24' bull 223 w 1-12 twist and have 2 pet loads that are shooting in the .3's. It took a lot of work too get it there, but was all worth it. It's the most accurate Handi I have ever owned. Now you need a barrel for your tried and true Weaver ;) .

I have that scope on a FT [field target] .177 airgun.  It can shoot flies off the back stop at 25yds.  They used to be made in the Philippines and have a good reputation with airgunners wanting high power clear optics for a decent price.  Mine's an AO version and holds zero over time.  Should do well on your gun.
