I prefer the post 68 760s and the early 7600s ( pre 1990 ) . Now as far as the 7600 being an upgrade on the 760 , ain't so . The only reason the 7600 was redesigned was because they changed the bolt for the 7400 as an improvement over the 742 , which it was ! They changed to the 7600 , just because they had always used the same bolt in both the 760 and the 742 and decided to continue doing so , for obvious manufacturing reasons  . 760s never had a bolt problem , it was the 742 that needed fixing ! The 742 and 760 had 9 locking lugs , the 7400 and the 7600 have two , There was never a lockup problem , it was a wear problem , and only on the 742 .

My plain Jane 760 in 270 Winchester was manufactured in 1954.  It has taken a lot of deer and I have abused it according to the lastest reloading manuals.  Published loads of the day are to hot today.  I have cut them back and it still takes deer.  I have crawled under thick brush with it, and climbed tall snow covered peaks.  Use a good modern lube that does not freeze and you will be in good shape.  I have never had a problem with the lugs binding up.   I consider it one of the safest rifles around.

Currently there are two Remington 760 rifles in the family.  A brother has one in 300 Savage and loves it.  I plan on passing my rifle to a granddaughter because I consider it to be very safe.

Before the day of the AR Remington 760 rifles were issued to the FBI and Border Patrol in 30-06.

It depends on how "best" is rated. The workmanship on 760s and early 7600s are better than the later 7600s. The older 760s have butt stocks with a comb height for using sights. The later 760s have a more scope friendly comb height. The 7600s with Monte Carlo stocks have a higher comb height that isn't really sights friendly. The original forearm setup on the 760s is pretty much like a pump shotgun using a nut to hold the forearm to the action tube and the action tube like a shotgun magazine goes through the action bar (the part the forearm attachs to). The later 760's forearm attaches to the front of the action bar with a screw through the front. If you install a swivel to the front of the forearm of the newer style you put stress on the action bar and not directly to the action tube. Between the older 760s, the later ones, and the 7600 it comes down to personal choice.
