Older frame locking up with multiple barrels
« on: August 11, 2011, 05:17:21 AM »
One of my Contender frames only "likes" one barrel every other barrel I try to put on it locks up and I have to take the thing apart to remove it.  It is one of the original frames with a 4 digit serial #.  Any suggestiions other than send it back to the factory?

     Thanks,
     Doc T

If its an original Contender blued frame it would have to be 1969 or older to have a 4 digit number, so that could certainly be called older.   ;)

I have no time now, but an advanced search here will bring up a heck of a lot of threads about exactly this issue and how to fix it yourself.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I had one like that would only unlock with the barrel that came on it finally just left it with that barrel and used my other frames when changing barrels.I tried everything that I could think to do with no luck. You might remember that factory is closed for two 2weeks and you may have to send all the barrels plus frame.sorry cant be more help.

I've had quite a few of those older "first" model 4 and 5 digit frames. It usually isn't the locking bolt/s that cause the problem but rather interference between the inside of trigger guard housing and the bottom of the barrel lug under the hinge pin hole. If, with barrel attached you can't squeeze up on the trigger guard thats most likely the problem. The newer barrels lugs are usually a bit thicker under the hinge pin hole cutout. Only way to eliminate the problem with all barrels would be the factory easy open conversion, but then you'll lose the cool looking original trigger guard and I believe they'll change the hammer as well. No way I'd do that to an early 4 digit frame. In my case I wanted a Reeder custom octagon barrel to go on my frame so I "inked" the bottom of the barrel lug and removed a VERY small amount of metal at a time until the interference was gone. I was perplexed over this and none of the custom barrel makers could help or knew how to correct until I contacted Mike **cencsored word ? ***. No matter what anyone thinks of him, he knows T/C's.
