rd,

You did good with that pickup!  Be careful though about having two birthdays in the same year as it seems to me I am aging too fast having only one B-day a year. ;)

I found it on local 'Texas Guntrader'.

Thanks BB...  I guess we try to appreciate B'days more, the more we have.

Reading last night about the 7.62x39 Handis kinda put a damper on my happiness over this purchase.  Though I was getting a good thing.  Turns out I was over enthusiastic.

My spare 30-30 barrel does lock up tight on the action so it's not a total loss.

We'll see how it shoots commercial USA hunting ammo.

Be Well...

rd,

the problems with the 7.62x39 handi had to do with MilSurp ammo.  Most folks that handload for them are very happy with this chambering in the Handi.

RD, I just got my 7.62x39 barrel back last week from H&R and it shoots great!  A real pleasure to shoot!  No problems, with Federal American Eagle ammo.  Have not handloaded for it yet, thats next stop.

You can roll some pretty stiff handloads in 30-30 for a Handi too. ;)

Congrats on the new rifle RD!!

Ol BW, you can load the 30-30 to much higher pressures too on a stronger platform, the 30-30 has more case capacity than the 7.62x39, 44.4gr water compared to 35.5gr for the 7.62x39, the old adage "there's no replacement for displacement hold true here also. ;)  I load my 30-30AI Handi to an estimated 60kpsi with no problems.

Quick, Im glad to see you added Paco's link!!

Spanky, Quick, your right displacement rules the roost.  I am not downing the 30-30, I'm just sticking up for the 7.62x39!  It seems the little russian gets a bad rap everywhere.  There is so much bad written about it that RD is second guessing his purchase before he has even shot his rifle.  Any issue with the 7.62x39 and some are ready to throw it in the scrap heap.

I have been shooting the little russian for a while.  I am not an expert reloader by any means but I have found out that it can do alot with a little powder.  With a few considerations for it having been designed to chamber and function in autoloading battle rifle, you can load accurate, dependable and versatile ammo for it.

RD, unless you want to shoot milsurp ammo, keep your little 7.62x39 and at least try it out.  It won't replace your 30-30, but I have a feeling you might like it. . . I like mine! ;)

Shoot it before you conclude you don't want it.  Mine eats anything I feed without a hiccup.  Mine has had over 500 rounds of both domestic and import ammo without a misfire, and it is deadly accurate.  It's an ideal little rifle.

Mine is very accurate right out of the box . Federal American Eagle 123gr SP shoots clover leafs if I could .They are getting hard to find for me though lots of FMJ stuff out there though. I am down to the last box here.So I will start to hand load them. I got 4 boxes of Lapua FMJ stuff I am going to shoot this weekend then use that brass for my reloads. FWIW if you planned on shooting Mil Surplus and it don't work you will be disappointed but if you handload or can find some 123gr SP you will be more than surprised at how accurate this gun actually is. There has been reports of good stuff from 150gr handloads also. I Love Mine. Kurt

The guys are right... the 30 russian is a heck of a cartridge. Just ask Gendoc how many guys he's surprised with his Handi. ;)

If you are going to handload for it, get some Accurate Arms 1680 powder and don't look back. The Hornady 123 gr is a true .310 diameter and should make a good fit in the bore. Stick with a standard rifle primer, no magnum needed here. Also, remember there are SMALL rifle primer brass (Remington brand) and LARGE rifle primer brass (Winchester and most everyone else making this caliber). Sort accordingly and save yourself some mangled LRPs (Guess how I know this!! :-[ )

Some have had luck with .308 diameter bullets in this bore size, and others are shooting cast 30M1 carbine boolits sized .311 under a charge of Unique.

Hope this helps.

OK, first thanks to GENDOC for PMing me some good info.

So... I'm playing with it and the extractor opens ROUGH and the case catches on the extractor going in and coming out.

FAQs... case catching appears to be normal per Tim.

Dis-assemble, polish the extractor and try to get burrs out of the under barrel opening.  Shorten the coil spring slightly.  Reassemble and it's smoother but the case still catches.  My 25-06 does not do this.

Glad my daughter has fingernails.  This will NOT be a dangerous game or fast follow up shot rifle.

It better be accurate..!
