Which rings for a nikon prostaff 3x9x40 scope for .35 whelen?

 I want to purchase a set of rings to mount a nikon 3x9x40 scope on my .35 whelen handi rifle. The main problem is hammer clearance (or so I read).  What are the lowest rings I can go with and have the scope not contact the hammer or spur?

Depends on how old the scope is, older Nikons had small power rings, newer models are bigger, also depends on how far back you mount it, trim the hammer spur a little and you won't have problems, or just mount it high and live with it.

You should be able to get away with medium Zee rings.

it will be a new nikon.  Do you think the medium zee rings will work for me?

I have two 45-70 H&Rs with Nikon Omega 3-9x40 scopes(5" eye relief) mounted in low Leupold PRW rings which are .230" from the top of the scope rail to the bottom of the scope tube, indentical in height to medium Burris zee rings , both have shortened hammer spurs for clearance. The Prostaff has less eye relief than the Omega, so you'll have to mount the scope further to the rear, so you may not have to trim the hammer with mediums, only way to find out is to try, see the FAQs for info on low profile hammer mods.

medium matte zee rings work fine on my nikon monarch 3-9x40 as mounted to  the whelen handi rifle
the ocular bell and power adjustment ring will be back past the hammer.
