Adjusting Model 94 iron sights...

Hi all...inherited a somewhat older (1965) model 94 (30-30) from an uncle, and immediately mounted a 2.5x Leupold on it..don't like the side mounts and the offset, so i removed it...now, how do I adjust the windage on the iron sights?  Tap it with a mallet??  Its shooting consistenly to the left, about 6" at 100, and about 3" of course at 50....I know this is a stoopid one, but, ??

Gently tap the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to go, if its shoooting to the left tap it to the right, and a little goes a long way just a small movement will change it at 100.    JIM

For what it's worth, there is a formula:   (sight radius)(error)/distance to target

Make sure you keep all the same units.  

Do I use the formula? No, I've found though that judicious taps with a brass punch will get me there.  One hint, use a pencil to make a witness mark from the sight to the barrel; that way, you can tell how far you go each time and will pay dividends when you get close to the final adjustment.

Drew25:  Normally you would adjust the front sight to bring the bullet impact to point of aim.  However, take a close look at both the front and rear sights to see if either of them appear to be 'off center' and then try adjusting that one back to center, first.  Be careful however if tapping the front sight.  The front sight base is attached to the barrel by just one small screw underneath the front sight blade.  If you whack the base instead of the sight you stand the chance of breaking the screw.  There are sight adjustment tools you can purchase from Brownells.  If you don't want to go that route, take it to your local gunsmith who should have one and have him move it over for you.  HTH.  Mikey.
