35Rem Handi
« on: July 29, 2011, 12:34:08 PM »
I walked into my local gun shop today and there sat not one, but two, camo stocked Handis in 35 Remington.  I really am thinking one will be mine by Monday!! :-X   Any reason not to do this??  Price is 319.99.  They have the "newer stlye" camo synthetic stock with the longer forearm.  They look SWEET!!!!  Not familiar with the 35 round either. although I do have dies and brass for reloading the 35 Rem!!!   I use the 45-70 Handi [have two of them!!] for 'primitive weapon season' here in MS.  The 35 would also qualify for that!  What can I expect out of this round??  I have two Win 94 30-30 that I really like to shoot during regular firearm season. How does the 35 stack up to the 30-30?

Thanks for any and all input!!!
Jeff

I just bought a 444 Handi with the camo synthetic stock set and rail for $260 out the door at my local gun shop, all new in the box.  He'd had it for a while though, it was priced at $279 plus tax originally.

Handloaded to +P levels, 2450fps with 180gr bullets, but the 35 Whelen would be a better choice if you want a .35 Cal, Bud's has all 3 models of them in stock for less.

Dont really want the whelen.  In fact, I was not even looking for a .35 cal.  Just though it would be a neat caliber and I thought they were much sought after.  I have read were several folks had to ream out  a 357 to make the 35 rem.
Might just be one of those 'got to have' handi rifles!!!

You may be interested in the Handi 35 Rem. 444 Marlin combo with synthetic camo stock. I saw two at the Jackson gunshow two weeks back. Both NIB one was $299 the other $349.I've been told that Van's in Brandon had that combo. Don't know thier price. There will be another Jackson gunshow in two or three weeks.

I have killed deer and bear with the 35 Remington and if you like the 45-70 and 30-30 you will like the 35 Remington. ( but the 30-30 and 45-70 are pretty problem free in a handi with the rim, the 35 remington is rimless) Although with those other two you really already have overlap covering where the 35 Remington would fit in between. I love my 30-30 and 45-70 Handis and I LIKE my 35 remington 336 lever, if you just want another gun, you will like it. But it will not do anything you can't aleady do with what you have.
I can see wanting one, as I like the caliber and don't yet have it in a Handi.
Hope you make up your mind before they are gone, those new camo stocks do look nice.

The Infinity camo stocks are available from H&R, so you can dress any H&R the way you want, I ordered a set with my 20" 7mm-08 light accessory barrel in April, see the retail parts page in the FAQs for part numbers. Ellett Bros and Hicks had a bunch of the 35 Rem Handis in stock recently.

Jeff,

What has not been mentioned as a plus for a 35 is the accuracy inherent in the cartridge. My experience with the 35 so far has been limited to the Marlin 336, but the 2 I have owned were and are tack drivers.  Velocity in factory loads is more or less equal to the 30/30, but remember you are driving a .358 diameter bullet now and the resulting thump will deliver more authority.

You also will gain the use of readily available bullets for the 38 Special & 357 Magnum to use as cheaper practice loads and the 35 is a top choice in the use of cast boolits.

The 35 Handi came about in response to the revised primitive hunting season in your home state of Mississippi, so if you need any reason to own one, call it state pride and getone!  Worse comes to worse, you can always drive over to Arkansas and sell it to me! ;D

I say get a .35 Remington and don't look back, you will be VERY happy with it. My expierence with the .35 Remington started many years ago, also with a Marlin 336. The cartridge and caliber is inherently accurate, and for a hunting round it kills all out of proportion to the paper statistics. I have one of the rechambered .357 Mag to .35 Remington barrels and it's great. I highly recommend the .35 Remington and would not feel undergunned for deer, black bear, Elk or moose with it. I also have a .35 Whelen barrel but always find myself reaching for the .35 Remington. I have a friend in Maine that uses his Marlin 336 in .35 Remington as his coyote gun (along with a Handi Sportster in .22 Mag). In his .35 Remington Marlin he uses 150 grain pointed SP factory ammo (one in the chamber and one in the magazine) and does great with it..get one, you will like it....<><.... :)

P.S. - This looks like a great deal..."You may be interested in the Handi 35 Rem. 444 Marlin combo with synthetic camo stock. I saw two at the Jackson gunshow two weeks back. Both NIB one was $299 the other $349."

I can give you an excellent reason not to buy it.

$319.00. Plus sales tax.   For a Handi-rifle?  Are  you kidding me???

Go to a couple of large gun shows, and look around.  With a little bit of haggling, you can get a Marlin 336 in .35 Remington in VG+ condition for about $350 to $375.  No sales tax.

And, you won't have to re-float the forearm, shim the hing, modify the extractor into an ejector, float the barrel, and all of the other things you have to fool with to get a Handi to shoot.

Get the rifle you looked at... the MS 35 Rem Handi. Mine shoots 200 grain Core-Lokts at 100 yards 1.25" for a three shot group,,, and that was in 100 degree heat. Almost no recoil and a heck of a bang flop round for deer/hog hunting... me like!!

I am just getting into the 35 Rem with the Handi with +p loads. So far so good. To me, the 35 Rem is a must have with the Handi. Just like the 30-30, 45/70 and 223. I am using a 200 grain bullet at 2350 fps maybe a bit faster. Hog a deer medicine for sure. Enough speed and energy to reach out there as far as I need to shoot around here. Recoil is about the same as the 308 which is about the limit for me in a lightweight Handi for real comfortable shooting at the bench. In the field, you won't even notice. As a bonus, the short, fat round looks cool too.
