another 250 contender ?
« on: July 19, 2011, 01:24:33 PM »
not to step on the 250 savage thread, I was in a shop today & saw a 7mm/250 contender package for sale, clerk showed me a loaded cartdridge. Anyone heard of this one? I have a 7mm TCU,don't think I would try it :o

Would be basically the same as a 7 IHMSA, considered too much for the Contender platform by most folks.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

There were a bunch of wild cats in every caliber 25 through 35 on the 250 Savage that they call IHMSA. I would not want any of them on a Contender frame.  My old number 26 Hodgdon manual list data for them.

Just my 2 cents on the subject. SSK chambers the Contender for the 375 JDJ and a number of wildcats on the 444 Marlin case which has the same case head diameter as the 250 Savage IMP, The IHMSA series of cartridges, etc. I've owned barrels for just such cartridges as has been mentioned. ANY round can be overloaded and become too much for the Contender or any other firearm, including a strong bolt action. The Contender has been chambered for rounds as large as 50 cal. , you need to know how to read pressure signs and respect that it's not as strong as some other type of actions. No reason at all a 250 AI or similar wouldn't "work" in a Contender, just not at the pressure levels it can run in a bolt action. IS that 7-250 you looked at a simple neck up or is it an improved Ackley type round ?

There is a big difference in PSI between a 250 Savage and a 375 JDJ.Probably 20,000PSI .Enough to turn a Contender frame into a hand grenade.Sure you can put just about any cartridge in one,but that don`t make it right. you don`t want to put over 40,000 in a Contender ,if that much.
