AO Express sight or tang mounted peep sight for Rossi 92
« on: January 15, 2004, 07:19:13 AM »
I have a .357 Rossi M92 and want to make it into a "stop-assault" rifle. What would better for the task-to have a gunsmith install an AO Express sight or a tang mounted peep sight? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both? Thanks

AO or Tang sight

srcjahc:  if you are looking to turn this lever into a home defense rifle I would suggest the AO sight, if it can be properly mounted to your rifle.  The tang sight might interfere with your grip in a close encounter whereas the AO will be right where you want it to be when you bring the rifle to your shoulder.

I have a Winchester 94 Big Bore with a tang mounted Lyman #2, which is fine for long range shooting and still hunting, but for quick shots without any grip interference I would go for the AO.  HTH.  Mikey.

What Mikey said and I don't even know what an "AO" is.  If your wanting this for an assault stopper, the tang mounted peeps are way to slow to use, and your going to have almost no sight picture at close range and it is in the way if your just grabbing the rifle in a panic( bad choice of word but I think you understand what I mean). If you like full circle rears, you might consider a full buck horn rear, it's at least far enough away from your eye that you can still see the target around the sight, and it is even appropriate for you weapon.

The AO I referred to is called (I think) the Ashley O (somethin') sight.  It's a rear mounted peep quite similar to the military peep and mounts to the receiver rather than the tang.  It's pretty darn quick on the pickup, at least for hunting, and gives you a lot of light gathering capability.  The nice thing (beneficial aspect - hoo boy) to the Ashley is that you really don't even see it when you shoulder your rifle - all you really see is the front sight, which centers naturally in the rear peep.  It's a pretty good setup.  HTH.  Mikey.

For personal protection the tang sight is out. Your carbine will need drilling and tapping for any of the sights. I have the XS (ashley) on a marlin .357 and I like it but it requires a taller front sight. I used to own a Rossi .357 that I had drilled and tapped for a Lyman 66 la. That is what i recomend for your carbine because if I remember right,  the front sight is part of the barrel band and can't be replaced. The Lyman will work with any front sight and is easier to adjust, especially if you use .38's and want to adjust sights when you switch calibers. The XS sight might be too high if you have the fixed front sight. The Lyman is very rugged- I dropped my rossi right on the rear sight once, and the lyman bent slightly, but didn't break. I worry about my XS beacause its cast ring might be brittle. The lyman will come with different 'peeps' for different light conditions or can be used without them for fast and furious shooting.

Also consider the Williams 5D or Foolproof Receiver Sight.  You can use different apertures, or go without the aperture to use it as a "ghost" sight.

Incentally, the term "ghost sight" has been around since at least the mid 1960s when I first heard it.  And it was used in exactly this way to describe a receiver sight with the screw-in apertures removed.  Of course back then you had Williams, Lyman and Redfield all making receiver sights.

The advantage to using the apertures is that you can get one with a small diameter hole for sighting in and fine sork.  Then Take it out to get a faster sight picture.

AO Sight Systems changed its name to Express Sight Systems. They changed their name because of a lawsuit  filed by American Optical.

Here is web page for XS Sight Systems. http://www.expresssights.com/
They make handgun sights, ghost ring hunting/tactical sights, backup ghost ring sights, scope mounts. power rods, and shotgun sights.

They have the cool Lever Scout mount which I had mounted on my Winchester 94 Trapper. A TRUE SCOUT RIFLE.

Someday I'll figure out how to post a picture.

I'm making some assumations here, that you visualize using this rifle in close distances, in the dark or very low light conditions. The AO wins out over the tang sight. But what may be even better is no sights at all. In Advanced Infantry Training, before going to Viet Nam we were trained by using BB guns with the sights ground off. I testify to the sucess of using this technique by being alive and here. The key is mounting the rifle to your shoulder and looking down the barrel like shooting a shotgun. For 30 or 45 feet a center mass body shot is very easy. Esspecially in a high stress sitution where you lose your fine motor skills. For training get a BB gun, tape over or grind off the sights, some silhouette targets and practice under low light conditions.

I forgot to mention to keep both eyes open. You need to gather all the light you can.

I would also like to reccomend the lazer jet type sights. There is nothing as intimidating as having that dot on your chest and nothing easier for the shooter as well.
Peep sights and home defense do not go together. One quick shot to  mid torso gives you a big advantage from that point on. No need for fine tuned accuracy. Best of luck POW

I disagree. The peep sight with the insert (aperture) removed is the fastest sighting system around, and if you need a super fast point and shoot, it doesn't get in the way. Put the inserts  in for range work and hunting. take them out when you get home. A green fiber optic bead or a white painted front blade, or if you can get a tritium insert fitted for low light work. The Ashley ghost ring, Lyman 66 la or williams fp with inserts removed are as fast as an aimed shot gets, you may need to aim and aim quickly to protect your family. If you don't need to aim, they won't be in the way. It's better to have them and not need them, than to need them and not have them.
