Gents and Madams,

While vegetating after some surgery have been perusing old issues of American Rifleman.  In the January 1981 issue of American Rifleman a story is related about one Charles L. Youngblood who authored "Ten Years on the Plains".  Any one familiar with the contents of this book?

Having devoured most everything else available in print on the subject of buffalo hunting and buffalo hunters are there any other books on the subject out there?

Recently read...

1.  Great Plains, Ian Frazier.
2.  The Southern Cheyennes, Donald J. Berthrong.
3.  So Long, Cowboys of the Open range, Truman McGiffin Cheney.
4.  The Champion Buffalo Hunter, Victor Grant Smith.
5.  Rocky Mountain Rendevous, Fred R. Gowans.
6.  The Buffalo Harvest, Frank H. Mayer.
7.  In Search of the Buffalo, Charles G. Anderson.
8.  Mike Venturino's excellent book, "Shooting Buffalo Rifles of the Old West".
9.  The Buffalo Hunt, Wayne Gard.

Not all are totally "Buffalo" or "Buffalo Hunter" oriented, but most do give some rather pointed first hand experiences and observations.

Windcutter, a few to add to your reading room on the subject:

a) "The Buffalo Hunters"  by Mari Sandoz
b) "The Border and the Buffalo"  by John R. Cook
c) " The Time of the Buffalo"  by Tom McHugh

Howdy,
Just finished a few minutes ago with the 1954 (fiction) book "The Last Hunt", by Milton Lott and published by Houghton Mifflin Company. 400 pages full of shooting and skinning buffalo, fighting off resentful indians, and finally running out of work as the buffalo disappeared from North America. Pretty good read! This book was later made into a movie in the early 60's if i recall correctly. Kind regards, Quigley

Quig 45-120,

Am familiar with The Last Hunt.

Have the VHS tape with Robert Taylor and Stewart Granger.

Also have the original newstand comic book of the same name.

Best of all am personally acquainted with the retired game manager who was in charge of the Buffalo herd in Custer State Park at the time the movie (The Last Hunt) was being made.  His first hand stories of the movie being made are worth repeating.  Am seriously considering spending some time with him and devoting some effort in writing a story on the subject....
