holes in chamber
« on: July 01, 2011, 03:54:58 PM »
I have asked this on other forums and they immediately tell me I'm nuts or how to fix it neither of which I am looking for. I have found that a peep sight makes a shootgun a better squirrel gun. So I drilled two holes through the top of my 12 ga turkey bbl threaded them and mounted a peep sight. I have shot it a few times and it works fine  although screw length  is critical to allow extraction. So far most pepople seem to think I am nuts. However, I would like to point out a few things:  1)Traditional muzzle loaders have big holes drilled in their chamber walls2. Lots of simiauto pistols have unsupported cartrige heads3. My s&w 317 has a fair amount of the rim exposed. I want to put a talo 357 on it anyway so dont worry about telling me to get a new one. Remember that the cartrige body is there to act as a sealand these are good steel screws.

FWIW, most gunsmiths won't drill and tap an H&R 12ga for a scope rail, H&R won't either, they solder them on.  I suspect a smith  wouldn't do two holes for a peep site either, I only drilled one hole for the WGRS peep on mine, and it's blind hole, used Loctite 380 to stick it in place to avoid the second hole, the chamber wall is just a bit too thin for multiple holes, specially all the way thru, IMO
