Ok all you TC Encore & Contender owners that have more rifles in your safe then the safe was designed for how do you store your extra rifle barrels in the safe? And if possible a picture would be grate.

I put mine in silcon impregnated gun socks.  The very few that aren't on frames.  8)

Does anyone have any opinions or experience or know of any problems with storing them in the foam of a storage case?  I typically oil the heck out of my barrels (with no frame) and keep them in locked cases.

I have had bad experience with foam.  Air circulation in an open space with a goldenrod is better even if it is more of a closet than a safe.

What kind of bad experience have you had?
The reason why I ask is because a friend had two barrels rust overnight while on a trip.  When on trips, we always keep our guns in cases and I had a feeling that either some water or sweat dripped on the foam before he put the barrels in the case.  The next day, he had rust on two barrels and around the scope mounts.  I wonder if perhaps it was moisture from temperature change.  When we used the guns, it was probably 95 degrees or more but then we brought the cases back into an air conditioned room and I have wondered if condensation had built up in the cells of the foam and caused the rust.  ???
This is the reason why I oil the snot out of my barrels if I keep them in the foam of my cases.  One of my cases has actually built up quite a bit of oil residue in it.  Since oils are based from fats, some of these fats degrade to fatty acids over time....and acids are what cause corrosion.  So perhaps too much oil isn't a good thing unless a silicone based oil is used.  ???
OK, now I'm babbling on and on.........
Please tell me your bad experience with storing in foam, if you don't mind.

Same kind of experience as you said.  Overnight, a week or a year... it can rust in a closed foam case.

By the early to mid 80's I had way too many barrels and other firearms to put TC barrels in the gun safe.   Not even later when I got a second safe.   So I made simple wooden racks for them and stored them in lockable metal lockers.    System worked well, kept prying hands off and preserved the condition of them and their scopes just fine.

Not sure if the company is still out there, but there was a place that made a system for hanging Contender and Encore barrels.  They consisted of brass pieces that secured in your frame with the pivot pin.  Those were shaped somewhat like the pins on the locking lugs.  You could hang Encore/Contender frames and barrels on the same rack.  I'm a big time theif of good ideas so I made my own out of oak.  Worked like a charm in the old safe I had.  Hadn't put it to use in the new safe though.

The racks could either go up on a wall or safe wall or they even made a revolving tree type rack.  Not sure if search engines will turn up the company or not.

The only time I ever picked up rust during storage on any of my guns was when they were stored in a foam lined case.  I left two guns at my Dad's house.  Mon wanted them out of sight, so she made Dad put them in a gun case with foam lining.  Then she stored them under the bed.  They stayed in the case for one year.  When I got back and took them out of the case the foam stuck to both barrels, due to rust.  Both barrels and recievers were rusted, guns had to be stripped and reblued.

I recently picked up a pool stick case for one of my barrels.  It says Sportcraft on it but works like a charm.  I got it for a buck at a yard sale.  I might just pick up  a few more of them.  Cheaper than t/c made cases.

Ranger, do you have any photos of your wooden pin racks?  If so, would you mind posting them so all of us might steal your idea?  Heck, if it's a good enough idea, maybe you should capitalize on it and sell them!   ;)
I've been storing all of my barrels in foam cases for years.  I take them out from time to time and make sure they are oiled well but I have seen a friend's barrels get rusty overnight.  I also ended up with some slight rust on a stainless frame once too.  I wanna get my barrels out of the foam...and soon!

It seems to me that the rust on the barrels stored in foam came from placing a hot barrel in the case.  I think as the barrel cooled in the case, moisture formed on it and then the foam kept the moisture and any acids etc from fouling and fingerprints directly on the steel and eventually caused the rust...even as quickly as overnight.  It's all to risky and I need to get them out of the foam cases.  Recently, I've been using "bore storers" and gun socks on my barrels and frames before placing them in the foam now, however.

Apparently On Target Technologies was the company I was thinking of.  The link above shows you the brass hangers.  As shown they're set up as a cradle for cleaning, but they can also be wall-mounted.  They have puzzle like ends so you can gang them together.  Also saw a tree of sorts that spun around on a lazy suzan.  Can't seem to find a pic of that.

Not sure if I can get pics of my set-up soon.  Holiday stuff going on.  I'll post some pics when I can.  Basically a simple matter of making the wall hanger to fit the barrel lug and locking pin area then sizing a piece to fit the frames if you want to hang frames as well.

Alright, got some pics for you.  Again, this is my homemade system for storing barrels and frames.  Right now just one Encore frame and three barrels.  Pics show the rack that attaches to the wall and how the barrels sit.  Also, the piece to hang frames.

Ranger, very cool.  8)  I'm wondering how I can attach that to the wall of my safe.  I'll have to take a look at a way of rigging something like that up.
Thanks for sharing!
