finaly some sucess with my BC
« on: June 19, 2011, 08:34:10 AM »
in the beginning I had a rough bore, then it developed ignition problems. so after trying all I could do on my own, I sent it back to H&R. it came back with the ignition problem fixed but still with a rough bore. I sent it back again and got back a smoother bore. its micro groove and measures .4550/.4565. Ive tried several lead bullits through it with dismal results. so as a last ditch effort I tried some cast from an alloy I use in auto pistols. I sized them to 457. I shot 4 groups at 100yds smallest was just over 1". average of the 4 was 1 1/4". Ill play with the seating depth but over all Im happy as can be. DR

I like any story where the hero snatches success from the jaws of failure. Way to go.

Just proves that every gun that comes off a production line or a custom gunsmith's bench, is an individual when it comes to the right combination of case, primer, powder and bullet.

dr,

glad you got the gremins out of your BC and very good that you can shoot those groups with cast lead.   I tried cast bullets in my BC from 300 grain up to 525 grain and never found a load that I liked.  My BC is a 45-120 so part of the problem was me pushing the bullets kinda fast.   Care to share you bullet style, weight, hardness and velocity?   I fixed my accuracy issue by switching to jacketed bullets.

thanks

the bullits I had sucess with are Lee 405 hollow base. I used a 20 in 1 wheel weight to tin mix. same as in auto pistol. the load was 28gr of H4198. its suposed to give me 1350fps. I was so thrilled I forgot to chrono one. this gun does shoot better with jacketed bullits. Ive not tried it but I may try gas checks. DR

thanks for the load info.   I use the Lee 405s in my BPCR 45-70 and they shoot fairly good, maybe I'll bite the bullet so to speak and download my 45-120 and see how they work at that velocity.

Well BB, just 'cause the bathtub'll hold more doesnt mean ya gotta fill it every time......... ;).
If you keep a bullet that 'fills the throat' under 1450ish fps it should do pretty decent and those cigars will still be easy to handle.

gcrank1,

I did try the lee 405HBs in the 45/120 awhile back.  I loaded them on BP substitute pellets.  150 grain equivalent of 777 yields >1,900 FPS.  I think the bullet left the barrel inside out. :o

Im sure the Buick you would hit would be impressed (and so would I behind it), but Im thinkin' that 1900 is a little too fast unless they were water quenched or lino........
Im too 'frugal' to use lino and too satisfied with slower velo's to go that far. I cant help but wonder what a 3/4 full case of Trail Boss would do there, though I havent researched it at all in a long case like that.
