loading the 35 remington for the handi rifle...
« on: June 14, 2011, 04:49:11 PM »
what bullet are yall using? not a fan of the hornady leverlutions, so dont really want to look at the ftx. always liked the coreloky ammo, so that could be a good option, but just wondering what else is out there. does barnes make a good bullet? speer? or should i go with a cast bullet?

uses for this load will be:
1) shot from a handi rifle
2) deer mostly, possibly hawgs. but mainly concerned with deer.

Back in the 70`s and 80`s Bob Milek was a strong proponent of the 180 gr Speer Fp for deer shot out out of the Thompson Center 14" contender. So out of the handi should be great for hogs and deer.

It's not from any manual I know of, it's from a 1982 Handloader magazine article on the 35 Remington by Layne Simpson, I've shot the 180gr SSP with RL7 load in my 35 Rem Handi, it does 2450fps.

I'll add my recommendation to the 180 Speer. If you have big bears, moose or Elk I would say the 220 gr Speer.

The more I look at the 35 remington the more I think it is one of those must haves.
It isn't a super magnum but dang it's got a great reputation backed up by many years of use. I think I will have to get one now.

I absolutely love mine! Its legal to use a 35 cal or larger handi rifle (or similar design single shot) in MS for prim weapon season. I don't need the range (read: recoil) of the 35 whelen, so the rem is the perfect choice for me. Don't get me wrong, I love my 444s but that 35rem is a sure sweetheart! It does good with the 150 gr corelokt factory ammo but since I'm reloading now, why not? Lol

My .35 remmy (lever action) just loves the remington 200 gr round nose and H4895.  Those roundnose will do the job at just about any velocity.  I had a Marlin cut to 18", satin finished, with big peeps and a scout mount with quick release rings.  Sort of a little brother to one of Wild West guns I handled once.  Love it!  Fast handling and accurate.  Sorry this is the H&R forum, just got carried away with my .35!  Get a .35, you'll love it, it's just a 'thumper', and they are very pleasant shooting!  (although you can do many of the same things with a .357 max)  44 Man

Just a word of caution using the SSP at top velocities.  It WILL come apart. I found it to be a problem hitting bones when fired at 2100fps from my MAXI. This bullet is designed for PISTOLs. IE lower velocity rounds. It truly excels in the maxi, Herrett, 35 rem from shorter barrels. But at more than 2200 FPS I feel it time to move to a rifle bullet. The 180 Speer is expressly designed for rifle fired 35 Remington and is a good lite bullet choice. If you can get to 2300 with a 200gr the Hornady 200 SP is an excellent choice. The standard 200 RN from Hornady is another great bullet!! Also as mentioned the Speer 220 GR for those that want the extra weight!

The Remmy works well with a number of powders. I have burned alot of 4320, 335 and 3031 in mine

Good luck and load safely,

CW

As I recall, it is a caliber well regarded within the Cast Bullet Assoc. for successful use of lead too.

I don't have one in a handi, but my Marlin 336 likes lead pretty well

I've been experimenting recently with 35 Rem +p loads and the 200 grain Flextip. I too would prefer a pointed 180 Barnes TSX designed for the 2300-2450 fps the +p yields. Barnes did make a 180 TSX that should work at +p velocities but I can't find any. I think they stopped making them. I have read that the Speer 180 grain bullet is a good bullet for this caliber for extra penetration.
