Best twist for 55-70 grain 223 bullets?
« on: June 23, 2011, 04:57:27 PM »
I see barrels with twists from 7-12 twists.  What barrel should I get for my Bushmaster for varmint hunting and target out to 300 yds.?

Yes 9 twist will work but I would also go with an 8 twist because you just may want to shoot 77 gr bullets for target and it will work with the 80 gr Sierra MK also. You have to single load the 80 gr Sierra but the 77 will work through the magazine. It is hard to over stabilize a bullet but easy to under stabilize one so I always go with the faster twist.

+1
1-9 will work if the stopping point is 68 for a match bullets & the 70's that I am aware of are round nose, so again fine, but like shot 1 said if you go heavier you will be much better off with a 1-8. I have a RRA Var. 24" 1-8 & it shoots 55's just fine.

My DPMS 1-8 20" barreled AR will not shoot 55s well at all. V-Max, SP, FMJ, or hand loads. 40s are even worse. Hornady 75gr HPBTs are excellent at 100yds and darn good at 300.

thats odd. Ive got a 1 in 7 colt that shoots 55s into an inch. It does about half that with 60s though. It will not shoot 50s.
